For clients who are looking for strength-based, shorter-term therapy, I draw from various psychology approaches including: Positive Psychology, Brief Action Planning, Motivational Interviewing, and the Transtheoretical Model of Change.
My training is varied, and I work in an integrative way, connecting mind, body, and soul. My perspective on helping and healing draws from a blend of psychology approaches as well as a variety of complementary and alternative philosophies, such as mindfulness. A key foundation of all the work is based in trauma-informed practice. Being an integrative therapist and having a broad range of training is beneficial. It allows me to draw from a toolbox to develop inclusive, effective, and individualized treatment plans to best meet the needs of my clients.

I draw from a number of therapeutic modalities that include CBT, DBT, narrative therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and behavioura activation.
Over the years I have had the honour of witnessing the change that people make when they engage in various forms of therapy and can attest to the incredible amount of strength and personal knowledge people bring to this process. Life often presents us with unexpected challenges that can feel overwhelming and insurmountable. Life transitions, stress, depression and anxiety can negatively impact our coping and confidence. These difficulties often become the dominant story in people’s lives and get in the way of engaging in life in the ways that they want.

I believe that psychology is a tool for solving problems and working through change. In my career, I have helped many people 'get unstuck', overcoming emotional difficulties and working through trauma, grief, and loss. I also regularly work with couples and families, helping with challenges including marital conflict and parenting difficulties. My approach is integrative, and tailored to each person that I meet. I draw upon a number of evidenced-based approaches, including emotion-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, experiential therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy.

Whatever road brought you to this page, welcome. I'm glad you are here. Do you feel lost or disconnected from yourself? Would you like to take steps to live a more authentic life? Do you want others to get to know the real you? Maybe you are wanting out of the closet, out of the shadows, or to have a space to explore your identity, sexuality or relationships. You might also be looking for a gender affirming therapist to support your journey as you begin or continue your transition. I take a holistic and anti-oppressive approach to mental health, and believe we all have the potential to grow, rewire our brains and heal.

In the flow of life it can be easy to lose track of who we are and the parts of ourselves that we value the most. Maybe you’ve never had a chance to grow into the person you’d like to be, or perhaps you’re held back by other factors such as life transitions, unhealthy relationships, toxic work environments, cultural expectations, illness/disease, or self-limiting beliefs. Let me help you navigate these challenges and create a life that reflects your values, true sense of self, and preferred ways of being.

Welcome! Having been one of the first in Calgary to be certified in sex addiction therapy, the bulk of my practice consists of individuals and couples in various stages of sex and other addiction recovery. Do you need help in the struggle to remain sober? Would you benefit from guidance in the formulation and maintenance of an effective recovery plan? Do you need a compassionate listener as you make sense of the trauma of discovery? My goal is to promote awareness of your emotional life; to help you establish and negotiate appropriate boundaries; and to enhance trust in all your relationships.

Motivational Interviewing Counsellors
How does motivational interviewing work?
Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathises, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.
Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?
Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviours in children.
How long does motivational interviewing last?
Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.
What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?
In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behaviour.
