I support people who are struggling with the impact of trauma in their daily lives. Past traumatic experiences such as sexual abuse and violence, domestic violence, or abuse and neglect in childhood can wreak havoc on an individual’s life and relationships in the present. Other times, new experiences can unexpectedly trigger unhealed wounds. The good news is that people are resilient and can overcome these challenges. I believe that everyone can heal. In therapy, I will support you to connect with your inner resources and strength to rewrite the story of your past and heal from it.

My goal is to help my clients feel more like themselves again, and to help lessen the influence of the problems that bring them to therapy. I have a particular interest in the areas of trauma, PTSD, sexual abuse, disordered eating and body image concerns, domestic violence, women's health, chronic pain and chronic health issues (ie. migraines, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue), depression, anxiety, coping with stress, grief and loss, and adoption. I provide goal directed treatment, and I strive to be collaborative and resilience focused with clients. My current clinical focus is with adults and older teens (16+). I am LGBTQ friendly.

I strongly believe that the relationship between a client and therapist is the key factor in supporting change and as a result, I always make it a priority to provide safe spaces for individuals to share their stories. This allows us to work together to create a supportive plan that will assist them in overcoming their challenges. Counselling involves advocating for clients within their many social systems, modeling empowering behaviors by teaching clients how to access services, and encouraging clients to become advocates for themselves within their communities.

I describe myself as a transformational therapist not because it is trendy but because my approach is centred on transformation. Each of us has an internal drive towards healing; we seek to be better than "fine." We all experienced trauma in one form or another, no parent who has ever lived could meet every need we had as children. We all have parts of ourselves that we have cut off, disowned, or devalued. In therapy, we work together to construct a new experience, allowing you to reclaim who you truly are.

Like a lot of us, we put off our mental health struggles when the weather is nice, because nothing feels as bad at the beach or in the sun. It's a sad reality but summer has ended and winter is coming. Now is the perfect time to begin working on your mental health, improving your coping and communication skills, or dealing with those issues that were put on the back burner over the summer. Around this time of year I see clients come in prepping for the holidays the family discord that can come with returning home, or sometimes it's clients wanting to learn how to balance the stress of home and work. Whatever the issue, let me help.

When it comes to counselling it’s important to find someone who is good fit for you. I may or may not be that person! Learning a bit about me might help you figure this out or reaching out to share what you are looking for might also help. I am okay not being the right fit, what is important is that you get what you need out of counselling; I can always make suggestions for other people who might be more suited to what you are looking for!

I work with clients who are seeking a deeper sense of peace and purpose, struggling with anxiety, grief, or relationship challenges. They are looking for guidance that respects their Catholic faith, blending professional counselling with spiritual support. They want to strengthen their connection with God, find clarity in their struggles, and achieve a sense of wholeness. Their goal is to heal emotionally, grow spiritually, and lead a life filled with hope and fulfillment. They desire a counsellor who can walk alongside them, offering compassion, understanding, and faith-based wisdom to help them navigate their journey.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
