Accepting new clients for online therapy! Living with chronic illness, disability, or neurodivergence is hard. Getting through the overwhelm of everyday life feels impossible. You're starting to feel like all you think about is your condition and everything it has taken away from you - work, hobbies, sleep, relationships. Your family and friends don’t get it. They try to help and probably mean well, but sometimes the dismissive way they say things makes you feel worse. You try to hide your symptoms to seem “normal” but inside, you feel like you might break.

My areas of expertise are: shame, chronic pain, chronic illness, neuroplasticity, boundary setting, wellness, and executive functioning.
Welcome! As a Certified Health & Wellness Coach, clients typically work with me around a desire for change. Sometimes people arrive knowing the desired change and other times discovering this change is the place they want to start. Our work could be around deepening your understanding of yourself, processing current experiences, building wellness into your life, building new habits, cultivating confidence/self-compassion, or getting "unstuck". The possibilities really are endless! My approach is a balance between facilitating discovery, regaining power, and making choices that allows movement towards your desired life.

Areas of interest: resilience & posttraumatic growth, women's mental health & wellness, communication & relationship skills, couples counselling, post-IPV support (non-crisis), single parent support, parenting kids with medical/mental health complexities, chronic illness (patient and caregiver), parental narcissism, relational trauma, gender & sexuality.
Therapy is your place to be exactly as you are. I offer compassionate, non-judgmental therapy so you can feel free to be yourself. My practice is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and client-centered. Many of my areas of practice are grounded in lived experience, which supports my ability to offer authentic compassion and empathy. I've navigated the challenges of feeling overwhelmed by trauma and systemic barriers. Thankfully, my journey taught me that when we find good-fit therapy and work on developing deeper self-compassion, we are so much stronger and more capable of healing than we ever imagined possible.

Some of my specialties are: relationship difficulties, adjustment to a new reality (disability, separation, immigration), historical sexual abuse, intergenerational and intercultural family conflict, trauma, grief and loss, family rifts, chronic illness, and supporting family members and children impacted by a loved ones addiction.
Supporting others to overcome or rethink the barriers that can keep us from ‘thriving’, has always been my goal.  I have done this through extensive work in the non-profit sector (both in Canada and India), and now as a Registered Provisional Psychologist (R.Psych Provisional). I strive to create a non-judgmental therapeutic relationship in which clients feel safe, understood, and with a vision of what ‘stepping forward with hope’ might look like to them. I work with children aged 6+, adolescents, adults, families and couples. I look forward to meeting you and to finding out what is important to you at this time in your life:)

My journey has deepened my understanding of human resilience and the capacity for change inherent in every person. Throughout my career, I have witnessed firsthand how people can navigate and overcome obstacles, whether from trauma, negative experiences, or entrenched beliefs. I understand that while some may feel stuck in their struggles, there is always a path forward, and I am committed to helping you find it. I firmly believe that change is not just possible but achievable.

I strongly believe that the relationship between a client and therapist is the key factor in supporting change and as a result, I always make it a priority to provide safe spaces for individuals to share their stories. This allows us to work together to create a supportive plan that will assist them in overcoming their challenges. Counselling involves advocating for clients within their many social systems, modeling empowering behaviors by teaching clients how to access services, and encouraging clients to become advocates for themselves within their communities.

I work with all sorts of people, but 2SLGBTQ+ issues and the challenges of being queer in a majority heterosexual world are often the centre of conversation. I focus on helping people to understand and express their identity in the context of the intersection between 2SLGBTQ+ issues and the mental health struggles that accompany this journey, such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many people in and out of the 2SLGBTQ+ community are struggling with anxious or intrusive thoughts, dealing with family rejection or loss, and experiencing depression. It's time to take control of our identities.

Pain, heartache and suffering is not something anyone anticipates experiencing. When it comes out of no-where it may seem too unbearable to handle. Individuals may suppress what they are feeling, behave in ways they never thought they would, and/or experience secondary symptoms that mask what is truly going on! Whether it is the initial pain you are experiencing and/or years of wear and tear, please know that there is help available to you! I would be honoured to help you make sense of your experiences and take back control.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
