Seeking therapy is an individual choice and there are many reasons why people come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing emotional issues, or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in one's life that are difficult and the support of a therapist is sought in the pursuit of personal exploration and growth. We all go through challenging situations in life, and sometime having extra support is needed. Therapy provides long-lasting benefits when the root causes are identified and effectively dealt with in order to live life that is enriching, fulfilling, and rewarding.

I believe that psychology is a joint effort between a person and their therapist. Psychology is not about labelling; it is about helping people understand their own strengths and resilience. Respect for the client’s personal and cultural knowledge is at the centre of the caring relationship. From that respect change and improvement grows. Many mental health challenges have social and historical roots. With practice, clients can learn to move beyond the past toward a healthier life.

I strive to create a therapeutic environment focused on collaboration, respect, safety, and trust. It is a big step to share your story with a counsellor and I honour that by ensuring the appointments are non-judgmental, fun, client-led, and focused on building upon the strengths and resilience that each client already possesses. Adults, teens, and children always do their best when they can but we can often find ourselves in patterns that may not be meeting our current needs. Through counselling, we can acknowledge our needs and discover new language, tools, and patterns to meet these needs in more functional ways.

Hello, I'm Russell. My passion is helping people navigate their challenges and build fulfilling lives. I hold a Master of Education degree in the counselling practicum route. I have also worked over 15 years in human services with diverse populations. My training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based approaches equips me to support you effectively. ACT is a well-researched method that helps people facing a variety of challenges, from depression and anxiety to trauma and stress. By working with our minds rather than against them, ACT addresses the root causes of distress, not just the symptoms.

Have you lost the joy you used to find in going back home to the people you love most? Do you feel overwhelmed in your life and relationships because the anxiety, pressures and expectations that used to be under control feel like they’ve gotten to place where you’ll never catch up? Have you become afraid to hope for the life you want with the people who matter to you most? Now more than ever, couples and families are feeling overwhelmed by trying to create the family life they long for amidst a high pressure, high paced, high expectancy world.

Experiences, no matter how we perceive them, have the potential to be impactful and alter the direction of our lives. Sometimes these experiences can be confusing when they challenge our previous moral, emotional or logical views of the world around us. These changes do not have to be detrimental regardless of how intense the experience(s) are felt and in the event you find they are please reach out. This process starts with a simple conversation and is built on a foundation of mutual respect, unfiltered communication and trust. My job is to ensure you take back the control to direct your life based on how you choose to live it.

“I… need… help…” can be three of the hardest words to say, and It's no secret that life throws a seemingly endless supply of challenges at us until we are so overwhelmed that, before we know it, we endure hardships navigating our relationship with ourselves and those that we care for and love.

Life can be tough, we can feel overwhelmed, confused and hurt by the situations we face. Sometimes we need a place to regroup, a place to explore and someone to listen.

Relationships are difficult. I work on building communication to help each partner feel seen, heard and understood. We often find ourselves in cycles or patterns of interacting with each other. Learning about these patterns can help us find new ways to bring closer to our partner. Increasing communication, connection and intimacy.

Everyone encounters pain and suffering throughout life, and figuring out how to process and channel that emotion is at the heart of my work. Having worked closely with Indigenous populations in Manitoba, California and the Great Lakes region, I use both culture and background to inform treatment. Every person is unique and your specific needs will determine our approach, all within a safe, secure and non-judgmental environment. To that end, I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is based on acceptance and empathy and is essential to client change.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
