Stress can impact the whole person and trauma can turn one’s world upside down. Sexual and physical assault, combat, medical traumas or serious accidents are all examples of traumatic events that can cause an array of distressing symptoms. Anxiety, depression, flashbacks, nightmares along with nausea, and chronic fatigue are common and can wreak havoc on relationships. Sometimes feelings of horror, anger, sadness can seem to come out of nowhere making people feel like they are going “crazy.” But they are not. These are symptoms of trauma, and specialized evidence base treatment can help.

Hi, I am Candace. I specialize in working with adult women who have experienced relational trauma, using both individual and group therapy. The truth is most of my clients do not use the term "rational trauma" to describe what they have experienced. Instead, they explain that they have decided to reach out for help because they desire to take control of their lives after experiences such as intimate partner violence and maltreatment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, workplace bullying, being betrayed by someone they trusted, childhood trauma and coping with the impact of being in a narcissistic abusive relationship.

Life is filled with very few certainties, but we can be certain that life will always change. Sometimes that change is big and explosive, while other times change happens so slowly that we barely notice it. Sometimes we seek that change for ourselves and other times that change can be thrust upon us. However you find yourself in relationship with the notorious thing called change, please know that you are not alone and that you can and will get through this.

I help individuals and couples navigate communication issues, intimacy concerns, sexual dysfunction, infidelity, trust issues, and trauma related to sexual abuse. If something feels off in your relationships or sex life, I'm here to provide support. Together, we'll navigate the challenges of stressors and delve into unmet expectations. If anxiety, low mood, self-criticism, or shame are barriers, or if you feel like you've been conforming to societal expectations rather than embracing who you are, our focus will be on rediscovering your authentic self.

My heart especially goes out to those who find themselves at the intersection of queerness and faith, and those who have suffered spiritual, emotional or sexual abuse and trauma.
My name is Naomi Isaac (she/her), and I am a queer therapist who specializes in working with individuals who may be struggling to integrate queer and spiritual identities. Queer people from religious faith backgrounds (and their families) are often marginalized by both the queer community and their faith community, and may feel alone in the struggle they may have to understand their queerness in the context of their faith or religious upbringing. Having a therapist who is familiar with both worlds, who will respect all aspects of their identity, is crucial in working through these unique challenges in counselling.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
