Stress can impact the whole person and trauma can turn one’s world upside down. Sexual and physical assault, combat, medical traumas or serious accidents are all examples of traumatic events that can cause an array of distressing symptoms. Anxiety, depression, flashbacks, nightmares along with nausea, and chronic fatigue are common and can wreak havoc on relationships. Sometimes feelings of horror, anger, sadness can seem to come out of nowhere making people feel like they are going “crazy.” But they are not. These are symptoms of trauma, and specialized evidence base treatment can help.

First, my gratitude for your curiosity about my work. The foundation for all of my work is from a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and anti-oppressive lens. I have had the honour of working with a wide range of people who seek to navigate through challenges such as childhood trauma, sexual abuse/violence, grief, intimacy issues, anxiety, and chronic pain. I have witnessed the often beautiful and life-shifting, but complex journey of navigating such issues and the courage it takes to do so. I aim to create a space where this vulnerability is met with compassion, safety, support, and a guiding hand if you feel you need it.

Are you looking for a helping hand through divorce, or other trauma, or are you struggling with feelings of uncertainty, general unhappiness, depression, or lower than ideal self-esteem? Together, we can look at strengths, look at what is not going the way you would like it to go, and strategize a plan for making things better. If you have experienced trauma - whether from a car accident, an assault, or abuse as a child, then I definitely have skills in helping to reduce ongoing negative effects of these experiences, primarily using a technique called EMDR, as well as other strategies.

Trauma impacts all areas of our life. It can leave us in a constant state of discomfort, anxiety, or feeling unsafe in our own bodies and the world. We might find ourselves reacting in ways that make us feel out of control. Our relationships might suffer, and we might turn to food, work, substances, or other distractions to try and get away from thoughts and feelings about what happened to us. Sometimes we might even feel like there are parts of us that think and feel different things. Trauma can come in the form of accidents, abuse, neglect, minority stress, bullying, micro aggressions, assault, or conversion therapy to name a few.

I completed a 400-hour practicum at the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton as part of my graduate program at Athabasca University and am also an advanced level student of Somatic Experiencing.
I do not work with police officers, security guards, peace officers, or prison employees. We might be a good therapeutic fit if you are at the onset of considering a life event in a new light; if you're trying to navigate systems of oppression with grace for yourself; if you're looking for support in finding a sweet spot between codependence and individualism in your relationships; or if you're just looking to be kept company in the hard parts of being a person.

I also specialize in working with those who are survivors of crime, especially sexual abuse.
I know that clients are the experts about themselves. I understand that concerns are multi-faceted and can often be complex...being human can be complex so the challenges that are experienced by people often take some exploration. Those who will work well with my approaches will not be looking for diagnoses or quick answers but will be looking to gain new perspectives in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Critical relationships from the past and present shape our thoughts about (a) ourselves, (b) others and (c) our expectations for relationships. Thoughts and expectations shaped by our experience, in turn, shape our perceptions and influence the choices we make and the things we do--often in limiting and self-defeating ways. When our need for safe, meaningful and satisfying connection is complicated by difficulty of some sort, we frequently develop troubling symptoms.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
