Partnership can be tough. It can be hard to think clearly when our relationship with the most important person in our life is going badly. Emotions can get intense - hurt, anger, sadness, or betrayal can overwhelm us. We become preoccupied, and our social lives, work, and family life can suffer. We can get lost in some pretty horrible stories about ourselves or are partners, and when we're lost it can feel impossible to get out. The science of attachment offers a clear lens to understand these challenging behaviours and feelings, and pathways out.
Couples therapy offers an opportunity to reset, learn skills, and make new commitments in a safe, structured environment. When we understand our thoughts and feelings, we can approach ourselves with kindness and chart new courses of action that are in line with who we are. We learn to respond rather than react. We can get better.
While I have a general practice, I specialize in working with couples where significant trauma and mental illness is present. I also work with attachment disorders such as Borderline Personality Disorder, and relationships where domestic violence has occurred.
