Maya Angelou once said, “there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”. I am here to support you in expressing your untold stories. I will witness and listen to your untold stories and help you express and process them through the tools that expressive arts therapies provide, particularly art. Art therapy is a less challenging medium to explore your emotional needs. Through our art therapy sessions I will help you catch those overwhelming emotions and entangled thoughts. Together we will be able to find the best strategies for you to make the changes you need to feel better and heal.

I specialize in working with children, teens, and families, using expressive arts therapy as a means to help navigate complex emotions, trauma, and life transitions.
Sometimes life leads us down a path where we feel there is no clear direction. These paths may leave us carrying trauma, anxiety, or other stressors that have us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and struggling to move forward. I'm here to help you reclaim your voice, build resilience, and regain a sense of balance to move forward. Art therapy provides unique ways of self-expression, while processing complex thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Art therapy can empower us to discover new strengths, build new and stronger connections with ourselves and others, and foster a sense of belonging and well-being.

There are points in all our lives when we need outside help. Understanding your emotions and behaviors that are informed by past experiences and negatively affect your self-esteem and relationships with others is challenging. Often we want to change but don't know how. Developing a therapeutic alliance where you feel safe expressing and exploring all the parts of yourself- the good & the bad, is a valuable gift you can give to yourself. I value helping clients to explore the complexity of their beings, process pain, and use their struggles as opportunities for personal awakening and change.

You want to be more in touch with yourself but you have been held back by anxiety, trauma, and people taking advantage of you. As part of the LGBTQ2IA+ and geeky communities, you sometimes feel like you're cast aside and rarely understood. It is so tempting to give up, but you continue to persevere! You've been fighting on your own for so long that now you're ready for some more support from someone who won't ask you to educate them about being queer/the MCU/BDSM/pop culture references.

I welcome older children (aged 11+), youth, and adults to my practice. Through discussion or creative process, we carve out a space to hear from your voice of awareness, and from there, identify its needs and goals. From stuck habits to difficult relationship dynamics, we can identify parts of your life that both are and are not serving you; so as to strengthen the parts of you that nurture the more positive aspects, while working to better understand and manage the aspects that may be holding you back. Through a blend of psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and humanistic approaches, we honour and explore your identity and its roles.

Expressive Arts Counsellors

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
