Whether you are dealing with past trauma or current triggers that keep you from moving forward, there are always ways to process what has happened and how we can work together towards a more fulfilling future. As an art therapist with a trauma-informed lens, I incorporate counselling, somatic awareness, movement, and play into my work, to enhance resiliency and promote healing. Issues I have worked on include intimate partner violence, self-harm, sexual abuse, and refugee, immigration and acculturation issues, as well as intergenerational trauma.

My practice is designed to meet your specific requirements for an individual or couple. I have an integrative approach based on emotion-focused therapy (EFT), mindfulness, Trauma, psychodynamic, and humanistic therapy. I also use Neurofeedback (ILF). I work with you to enhance your couple connection by identifying how your emotions, mind, and stress all work together to trigger inappropriate ideas, feelings, and behaviors, creating a dynamic in your relationship that may be undesirable. I help you have greater access to your own healing power, so you can help yourself and/or balance your relationship.

Difficult life challenges and decisions can be overwhelming. Clients can feel stuck and directionless. I have a real capacity to help clients gain better understanding and create change. I have a Masters in Counselling, McGill University and am a certified Executive/Life Coach. Clients can have challenges that benefit not just from awareness or insight but also need behavioural change. I facilitate clients to learn practical skills and explore issues more deeply. Having lived and worked overseas for 10 years in several different countries means I have cultural awareness. I am skilled at picking out the real issues and concerns.

Whether you are struggling with a long-standing issue or are in acute distress, you will find me to be an empathetic counsellor who will take the time to learn about your particular story in order to best support you. No two people or two situations are alike and therapy must similarly be tailored to the individual's needs. I will do this by first meeting you where you are and working at your pace to move in the direction you see for yourself. In the process, you will develop alternate perspectives and learn techniques to challenge self-defeating thoughts or behaviours that hold you back from living authentically.

Throughout our sessions, I strive to create an environment of compassion, acceptance, and present moment awareness. I don't see myself as fundamentally different from the client, but rather as someone who can bring a fresh perspective to their situation. I believe that the client and I are both climbing our own mountains, and I can use my vantage point to identify obstacles on their mountain that they may not be aware of. In therapy, every struggle is important, and no one's pain is greater or less than another's. Together, we can then find new ways to navigate these obstacles and chart a new course towards a more fulfilling life.

In my ideal client, I envision someone who is seeking a safe and supportive space to explore their emotions, express themselves, and find healing through art therapy. They may be facing a wide range of challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, interpersonal and/or self-esteem challenges. They desire a therapist who can create a non-judgmental environment where they can freely explore their thoughts and feelings through various art mediums. The goals of my ideal client are multifaceted. They want to understand themselves better, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and enhance their overall emotional well-being.

Life sometimes imposes overwhelming challenges that cause us feel lost and believe there is no choice but to suffer. When we are in the midst of a crisis it is not always easy to see a way out. However, in these circumstances, there is often an opportunity for personal growth. It is at this time that a professional may help you identify inner obstacles preventing you from moving forward and experiencing life to its fullest. I see my role as helping clients with that. My clinical practice focuses on individuals and couples from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, struggling with relationship issues, anxiety, and depression.

Would you like to stand in your power, be more in control of your life? To solve a problem, Einstein said you must first change the mindset that created it. It starts “within” you! Having worked with thousands of clients over 18 years, I’ve observed that we have 2 voices in our head - the conscious and subconscious minds. When your 2 voices don't get along, it feels like a battle is raging within, and it’s this gap that causes your anxiety, depression, fears, and emotional struggles; but when your 2 voices align in harmony, you experience inner strength, joy, passion, your TrueSelf, and feel energized in the pursuit of your desires.

For the last 25 years I have shared my time as a psychotherapist and art therapist between the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and private practice at the Queen Elizabeth Health Centre. In addition, since 2005 I have taught in Concordia University's Masters in Art Therapy. I offer a therapeutic place for adults, children and teenagers to work individually. I work with a focus on both current maladaptive patterns, origins of current emotions, behaviours and thoughts, and a strong emphasis on one's sense of self, while always finding the strengths and resilience that is in each person.

I strongly believe in your innate potential for growth and healing. I aim to create a caring, authentic and collaborative atmosphere to facilitate that process. I meet you where you are in your journey and offer a deep sense of engagement and in-depth listening. I work predominantly within a psychodynamic framework to address the unconscious factors which contribute to suffering and symptoms. By engaging with unconscious material, you will expand self-understanding and self-awareness. In my work, I typically incorporate elements from mindfulness, breathwork, emotion-focused therapy and compassion-focused therapy.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
