Becoming a mom is one of the most intense transitions a woman will ever experience in her life. You may experience feeling anxious, worried and overwhelmed about this new role. You may be feeling like you have lost your sense of self, your identity. You may be feeling a strain in your relationships. You may have scary thoughts that pop-up unexpectedly that prevent you from getting much needed sleep. It IS possible to relieve the anxiety and difficult feelings. It IS possible to enjoy the moments and find the joy in parenting.

I believe that everyone deserves counselling. There are so many different perspectives, stories, and experiences that make up who a person is. I encourage using a collaborative, compassionate, and growth-mindset approach to therapy. I will listen to your values and narratives and by using evidence-based methods, incorporate them with you to reach your goals.

Are past traumas, low self-esteem, and fear hindering your ability to be authentic? You may repeat unhealthy relationship patterns, struggle with intimacy, or have self-sabotaging tendencies. You may feel disconnected from yourself and your body, and lose your sense of Self in relationships. You may grapple with negative self-talk, stress, anxiety, and burnout, struggling to manage your emotions. Overthinking, overachieving, self-criticism, and self-doubt may be present as you question your purpose and whether you’re on the right path... I know how tiring and frustrating this can feel. I've been there and you're not alone!

Accepting new clients! I use a person-centered, collaborative approach, placing a heavy emphasis on the individuality of each client and take a ‘no one size fits all approach.’ It’s important to realize that some interventions and approaches that work for some, may not work for others. I have a strong passion for assisting first responders, elite athletes and clients who have experienced trauma or have been diagnosed with PTSD. Often times when clients feel ‘stuck,’ the need to access and process lived experiences and the affects of these experiences (incl. avoidance) via talk therapy, Brainspotting or Prolonged Exposure is key.

Are you at home in the middle of the day eating Doritos in your PJs? Could you use a little more excellence and a little less existential dread? So many of us come to a point where we hit a wall. Distractions, hindering thoughts and the feeling of overall suspended doom eventually creeps in. Do you find yourself hating what used to be your dream job? Maybe you're watching your dreams slip away as you grapple with capitalist confinement? Or perhaps you just haven't witnessed the best version of yourself and can't wait to show up to your own life.

My style as a therapist tends to be more interactive than neutral, and I work hard to help my clients to progress toward their goals as quickly as possible. I have been practicing psychotherapy for well over 25 years and have helped my clients in individual and couples session settings. I utilize the ACT, DBT, CBT, CPT, Psychodynamic, and existential therapy approaches. I emphasize treatment methods supported by the latest research findings. My research focuses on improving the predictability of the psychiatric rating scales.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
