Hi I am Julia, (she/her pronouns) and the fact you are looking for therapy is an incredible first step. I have dedicated my career to helping adults and youth find there way back to themselves and out of really difficult, harrowing and challenging circumstances in their life. My career began supporting youth who were sex trafficked and has since organically evolved into supporting young people and adults living with the effects of trauma, sexual abuse, sexual assault, gender violence, depression anxiety, as well as a full spectrum of mental health concerns. I work with individuals of all genders and sexuality.

Welcome, courageous human. If you're feeling stuck, chaotic, or overwhelmed, I see you. I work in depth, brain-body-spirit, with those healing from betrayal trauma (including childhood abuse/neglect, sexual assault, incest) and with people who require support during life changes. My approach is clinically sound yet also creative, not just 'talk therapy.' We are also bodies, entire nervous systems, and much of my clinical training focuses on brain integration through somatic (body) awareness. My hypnotherapy work is specific-problem/issue based, and different than regular therapy. Learn more about both here: www.karenconnelly.ca.

If you've experienced sexual abuse (rape, childhood sexual abuse, sextortion) you've likely noticed changes in how you think, feel and act. Maybe you believe that you deserve what happened or that you should have done something to stop it. You may see the world as a dangerous place and struggle to trust. Perhaps you feel on edge, hypervigilant and out of control of your emotions - or maybe you don't feel them at all. You can't sleep, relationships are difficult, you feel haunted by your memories, sex and intimacy aren't as they used to be, and it feels like nothing you've tried works. This is trauma.

I’m a registered social worker and highly skilled psychotherapist for over 15 years of clinical experience working with children, youth, and adults who are mainly survivors of sexual abuse. Sexual trauma can create long lasting emotional and psychological issues ranging from PTSD, relationship problems, trust issues, feelings of shame and guilt, eating disorders, anxiety issues, depression, addiction, self-harming or suicidal thoughts. It takes a lot of courage for someone to be ready for therapy in hopes for a chance to finally move on and not let the past continue to hold you back anymore.

My area of specialty is gender based violence - focusing on intimate partner abuse, sexual assault, childhood neglect, and developmental trauma.
I believe we are doing the best we can with the tools available. From my perspective, trauma can get locked in the body if there isn't enough safety to respond in the moment. I will support you in building on the wisdom you already have, and will creatively explore with you the places you feel stuck, shaky, or unmet. Through a relational and experiential process, I will bring attention and compassion to your suffering and untended needs. You can expect me to be warm, direct, steady, and responsive. Additionally, I am Queer & Trans affirming, kink-aware, and knowledgeable around polyamory/non monogamy.

Since 2018, I’ve worked with those who have experienced trauma, including attachment, abuse, and assault, as well as those seeking support for emotional distress, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and personality disorders, among others. The effects of trauma can leave us feeling vulnerable and unsafe long after the event itself. So often people can be left feeling fearful, hopeless, disconnected, and ashamed. I hope to guide you through your journey of healing these wounds and empower you to become your most authentic self. My practice is inclusive and integrative, ensuring that approaches are tailored to unique individuals.

The body keeps the score. I help trauma survivors live full, and connected lives. I have many years of experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, as well as harmful, abusive, or neglectful childhood experiences. Trauma may impact your self-esteem, or create relationship issues, anxiety, alienation from the body, feelings of being disconnected from yourself and others. A central focus of my work has been supporting clients impacted by trauma without the lens of pathology. That’s to say: there’s nothing wrong with you at all. Your way of being in the world was developed as means of protection.

I also work with survivors of sexual abuse and assault.
If you choose to work with me I will strive to create a safe, respectful and meaningful relationship with you. I will listen carefully, with empathy and without judgement. Sometimes I ask a lot of questions in order to understand, to the best of my ability, what things are like for you. In working together to help me understand your story, usually what happens is that things start to make more sense for you too. Confusion often gives way to clarity. Feelings such as anxiety, anger, depression and isolation often subside as well.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
