Therapy can be a daunting thing to consider, especially when dealing with grief. Grief can be overwhelming and evoke feelings of anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and confusion. Grief changes us in an instant, sneaking in and building a home in facets of our lives that we least expect. Grief is not solely about death; it encompasses any loss we experience. If you feel you're not "grieving properly," find the grief journey too overwhelming, or believe that having someone accompany you on this path would be beneficial, working with me may be one way to address the internal chaos felt after a loss.

I delight in the uniqueness and complexity of each individual. Holding space for personal work, reflection and deepening of awareness is a gift and honor that I hold dear. I feel it's important to make room for the unfolding intentionality of each person through body mind heart and soul. I tend to support experiences around development, grief, queerness, sexuality and spirituality with great tenderness. I look forward to learning from the people who I meet in my practice as I adapt to how they experience being supported.

Grief. It's a word heavy with emotion that often conjures images of loss, sadness, and heartache. But grief is so much more than that. It's a rollercoaster of emotions that is inevitable at some point in life. When we think of grief, we often think of the loss of a loved one. While undoubtedly a significant kind of it, grief can take many forms. It can be the witnessing of another's pain, loss of a job, a relationship, a dream unrealized. It can be the end of an era, the closing of a chapter, the diagnosis of life-altering illness, and the shattering of expectations. No matter its form, grief can often feel deeply isolating.

With 15 years of experience as the head counsellor at The Michener Institute, I offer professional support for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and family challenges. My use of both Gestalt Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) gives me a wide range of options for support for both individual and couples. Gestalt focuses on the 'here and now,' our body experiences and childhood patterns and helps us be present in our relationships. CBT has been rigorously tested in over 1000 studies, and is a therapy that supports depression, attention deficit disorder (ADD), panic and anxiety, phobias and stress.

My understanding and ways of helping with experiences of relational wounds and “broken heart”, emotional “burnout” and overwhelm, grief and loss, uncertainty and fear, despair and loneliness are deeply informed by attachment-based, emotion-focused, somatic-oriented, psychodynamic, trauma-focused, neurobiology informed approaches in therapy.
Sometimes we are looking for change, figuring out our next step, or getting stuck and not living our lives fully. There could be moments of deep emotional pain and struggle when we feel alone and vulnerable, facing isolation, grief, loss or insecurities in important relationships. Not always we see clearly how to tackle those and we want to have someone to check with, be heard and seen, or get ideas for new directions. Learning to face inevitable life challenges, upsets, and crises of existence with confidence is what therapy is all about.

Welcome! I try my best to create a non-judgemental environment where clients can feel safe to express themselves and believe that my role as a therapist is a collaborative one where I use my skills and expertise to help guide clients along their chosen path. I use an integrative approach that combines my background in Family Systems with extensive training in Emotion-Focused Therapy, and draws from several other evidence-based modalities. Along with my therapeutic lens, as a social worker I am mindful of the other issues and stressors that clients face in their lives such as caring for family or employment issues or diversity issues

I have worked successfully with individuals and couples experiencing stress, grief, anxiety, or difficulty managing anger.
In life we sometimes face questions that seem difficult to answer. We might stay focused on thinking through issues that do not have easily found solutions. I help you find paths of healing that are within. I want to help you find the strengths that are there; just currently hidden from view. When we allow your feelings to matter in session solutions become apparent. In my practice no feeling is ever wrong.

My goal is to de-stigmatize discussions on anxiety, loss, and disconnection.
Are you struggling with anxiety, hypersensitivity, a sense of disconnection or lack of belonging? It's possible you've endured a challenging upbringing and are contending with developmental trauma. These feelings can be incredibly distressing, but it's important to know that you're not alone. It's common to carry burdens for a long time without finding relief, especially when trying to navigate them alone. Embracing your true self is a collective journey; seeking guidance and support is essential. It's difficult to identify blind spots on our own. With the right assistance, there's a path towards feeling whole again.

It’s no small thing to begin the inward journey of addressing the issues that keep you stuck. Old patterns, loss of purpose, trauma, relationship issues – some of the pervading challenges of our time. Dealing with any of this can feel overwhelming and isolating but we’re not meant to do it on our own. In order to thrive we need connection. We need to be seen and feel accepted and we need to express our authentic selves. This is at the core of the counselling I provide.

We enter psychotherapy for a wide variety of reasons: The death or loss of a loved one, illness, job loss, divorce, addiction, etc., but all of us seek help because we are trying to find a better way to deal with the reality we are facing. My job as a psychotherapist is to help you talk about your emotions and reactions in a safe environment, figure out where these emotions and reactions are coming from, observe whether your reactions produce the desired outcomes and, discover new ways to react, if that would produce more desirable outcomes

Grief Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
