Change is difficult and it is hard to take the first step in seeking out therapy support. I know it takes courage to start the process. Most people I see want to feel better about themselves, less anxious, happier, more content. They often want some help for their kids or teens or for the family as a whole. When you start therapy with me, we focus on what you would like to be different in your life, what a small step towards your hopes would look like. We connect to that hope, because hope is what keeps us going. We also work to connect to your inner resiliency, your ability to bounce back.

Life is ever changing, bringing unanticipated circumstances which may leave us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, and stressed. I can help you to develop tools that work for you to strengthen and drastically improve your self confidence, self image and relationship skills. I can help you understand and control feelings of anger, anxiety, depression, PTSD, Trauma, grief and much more.

Often clients struggle with past difficulties encountered during childhood. Many of these painful, even traumatic experiences occur within their family of origin or with peers. As the person enters adulthood and then moves through later milestones, their childhood wounds can hinder present healthy development and interfere with their ability to become their authentic selves. Relational issues emerge as the person seeks intimacy and connection with others. Feelings of loneliness and isolation can result in anxiety and depression because these interpersonal challenges interfere with one's core sense of fulfillment and meaning in life.

I am a Registered Social Worker, currently completing my internship as the final component of my Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree under the clinical supervision of Gillain Easton, MA, BSW, RSW. As a generalist medical social worker, I have had the privilege of working with diverse patient populations, presentations, family dynamics, and presenting issues, across the lifespan. This work propelled me into doing my master’s degree sooner than I had initially planned, as it fuelled my passion to gain the skills, knowledge, and competency to hold a different role in the helping process.

My work is informed by Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Hakomi Therapy, and Internal Family Systems therapy, experiential approaches that harness the power of mindfulness and pay careful attention to the language of the body as a guide for healing.
Whether you want to work in a short-term way, finding practical solutions to problems you face, or in a more open-ended way, exploring and resolving core issues, I bring a warm and gentle presence and listen deeply to what you bring. I have worked as a therapist for over 25 years helping clients address a wide range of issues including relationship difficulties, stress, anxiety, depression, early trauma and loss. My role often involves encouraging clients by acknowledging the wisdom and resources they already possess and by noticing and supporting new changes as they emerge.

I use an integrative approach to therapy drawing from family systems, attachment, trauma-informed and cognitive behavioural, to address unhelpful thought and behavioural patterns.
Do you want to enjoy freedom from mental health issues like depression, anxiety and/or addiction? Or experience healthy relationships and a deep sense of purpose? If you feel down, stuck, lost, confused or overwhelmed and you can't seem to "just get over it", then you probably already know something needs to change. If it is too heavy to carry the weight alone anymore and you want to begin your journey back to wholeness, then let's do this - together!

If you're a South Asian couple/individual (ages 22 to 35) attempting to navigate challenges in your relationship, I see and hear where you're coming from. Besides the standard relationship challenges most people face, you are probably also navigating complexities around family & cultural expectations along with the different ways you or your partner's upbringing may be impacting how you show up in your relationship. This in turn could be bringing up emotions for you and your partner such as fear, resentment, loneliness or guilt. You might also feel stuck on who to turn to with your challenges due to the fear of being judged.

My approach to psychotherapy is integrative and evidence-informed, drawn primarily from Emotion Focused Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy and Attachment Based Family Therapy.
I work from a trauma-informed lens with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, loneliness and disconnection, and couples facing breakdowns in communication and conflict. In individual therapy, we explore the deep and often painful emotions that get in the way of feeling accepted, understood and truly engaged in one’s life and relationships, including exploring low self-esteem, self-criticism, and perfectionism, and the impact of lived experiences of trauma on their well-being. In couples therapy we uncover the negative cycle disrupting the relationship, helping to improve the connection and communication between partners.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
