My training and areas of practice include CBT, DBT skills, Psychodynamic/Trauma informed, Parenting, Couple/Family therapy, Group work.
The reasons for pursuing counselling are as unique as the individual seeking it out. There could be questions around an emerging identity, a difficult relationship or social issue, a separation/divorce or a child’s school difficulties or emotional distress. Whatever the presenting issue is for clients, there is most often over- whelming feelings of worry, sadness and confusion.

Hi! I'm Dr. Ashley. Over the past 10 years, I've had the privilege of working with children and adolescents to help improve their social-emotional health and well-being. I also help parents navigate various parenting challenges and learn how to best support their child's development from toddlerhood and beyond. I’ve had the benefit of working in a number of different settings, including hospitals, schools, community mental health clinics, and private practice. I currently own a virtual practice where I offer social-emotional assessment, individual therapy, and parent consultation to families across Ontario.

My practice is integrated as I draw from several models; Relational, Bowen Family Systems, IFS and Connected Parenting.
I am a family systems therapist who works with youth, parents and couples who have experienced various mental health challenges or are facing stress and anxiety due to relationship conflict. The families I tend to support are often feeling disconnected from one another and stuck in patterns of relating that often intensify their existing challenges. The foundation of my work is in building relationships where clients feel seen, heard and understood, allowing them to draw on their internal strengths. My role as a social worker is to help clients understand themselves and their relationships in a way that supports authentic growth.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed and unable to handle all that life has thrown your way we can work together to understand why and develop strategies that can help. I have a particular interest in helping support individauls during difficult life transitions, separation/divorce, parenting, career changes, etc. I bring an open and curious stance to therapy and take a client-centred approach which means you have a lot of the answers, they may just be buried under protective defenses like anxiety, depression, overachieving and substance abuse that are working hard to help you cope with painful emotions and issues of self-worth.

I have experience with many issues including, anxiety, depression, parenting, relationship issues and trauma.
I would like to invite you into a non-judgmental, nurturing, and anti-oppressive space, where we can work together to address the challenges in your life. Sometimes life can bring hardship and unexpected events, which can produce negative feelings and emotions. Some of these challenges require less support to process and work through, while others may take longer and require more frequent support to overcome. As your therapist, my goal is to understand you, your needs, and guide you to cope with or overcome the difficulties interfering with your everyday life.

Whether it’s a partner or parent, my job is to help you build back your life.
You’re not crazy for wanting to make sense of it. You’ve watched the videos, “how do I know if I’m in a relationship with a narcissist?” and you’re feeling isolated, embarrassed, confused. They’re talking about your actual life, but you don’t think you’re strong enough to leave. You’ve rationalized, communicated, begged. Maybe they’ll change, but they’re not the problem. You’re the one that needs to change. They say this, so it must be true, right? I need you to know that you’re not stupid or weak for staying. I was once in an abusive relationship with a narcissist, entangled in the chaos, and I doubted my strength to leave.

My name is Tyler, and I am a psychotherapist and art therapist in Ontario welcoming new clients. I prioritize unconditional positive regard and authenticity and believe in creating a safe and supportive environment for others to explore their experiences, emotions, connection to others, and self-concept. I am attuned to somatic and research-based practices that assist with healing from trauma, depression, chronic pain, and anxiety. Supporting others to navigate the emotional high and low tides of ADHD and neurodivergence (as an individual or as a parent) are other areas of my practice that are close to my heart.

Whether you are a first-time parent or a seasoned caregiver, navigating the joys and challenges of parenting children throughout their evolving ages and stages of development can be tough! Depending on your unique experience, complicated and layered emotions can arise in the parent-child dynamic which can bring us back to our own experiences as children. These memories may be painful or traumatic and can get in the way of being the parent we envisioned for ourselves.

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
