I work with individuals, families and couples struggling with trauma, relationship struggles, tough family dynamics and parenting. When you have experienced adverse events in your childhood or recent trauma you may have difficulties regulating your mood, feeling joy, advocating for yourself, and may often feel unworthy or undeserving of positive things. Life events can leave us worried about being both physically and socially safe, as well as lacking a sense of belonging. Anxiety is a common feeling, leading to low mood, anger, intrusive thoughts, failed or chaotic relationships. Living this way can lead to burnout.

I use an eclectic, trauma-informed therapeutic approach and have training in CBT and ACT.
As human beings we are bound to experience challenges in our lives. Maybe for you it is anxiety/depression, or maybe you struggle with self-esteem. Maybe you are concerned about stress, your relationship, or trauma. Or maybe you are struggling, and you don’t know why. Regardless of what you are experiencing, you do not have to go through it alone. I am passionate about walking through the valley with individuals and helping them learn new skills and find strength in themselves. I practice from a warm, caring, person-centred perspective and believe that everyone deserves to be heard and respected.

I specialize in providing trauma and grief responsive care to middle-aged or young adults, in addition to LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy.
Establishing a relationship with the hidden or unconscious aspects of your mind (psyche) and body (soma) can help you learn how to live with your deepest emotional wounds, while also offering you the opportunity to discover vitality, freedom, and joy. I can support you in learning how to lean into your pain and grow your edges so that you can express yourself more authentically. I use safe psychological practices to connect people to their own innate wisdom; coherence between your mind, heart, and body is possible.

Choosing a therapist, is about finding your person. There is a "goodness of fit" in terms of style, personality, humour etc. that is an integral part of building a therapeutic alliance. That should be coupled with excellence in one's education and supplemental training as the expression, "Jack of all trades, master of none" exists for a reason. My expertise is trauma recovery grounded in creating a felt sense of safety, connection & attunement. We journey together. Trauma does not define you or your worth. If you reach out, I will reach back. Honour your own worth, even in the process of finding your therapist person, don't settle.

I am thrilled to be able to help people, "help themselves." I believe we all have answers to our problems and issues, which talking to a compassionate, caring person helps to uncover. Trauma of any kind can make us susceptible to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Certain situations in life are difficult for us to handle at times. I help to provide strategies and guidance in trying out new ways to cope. Shedding light onto our issues and behaviour which is not working for us places us in in the driver's seat as we control our reactions.

My area of expertise include: anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship issues, and addictions.
The individuals and families that I support, experience feelings of overwhelm and find themselves ‘stuck’ in patterns or strategies that hinder their well being. Avoidance, anger outbursts, intense worrying, controlling tendencies, substance use, and disconnecting from ourselves and the people we care for, are just some of the strategies we use to cope with life’s stress. We can become deeply stuck in these patterns even at the expense of our own well-being, and/or inter-personal relationships. Luckily, our brains and bodies are capable of great change. Restoring ourselves to a more optimal way of being, is possible.

Facing loss, sorrow and grief can be so isolating. It can be hard to know where to turn, and often times a mainstream approach won't help. If you've faced trauma, loss, depression, grief, or struggle with your self-esteem or identity, I understand. I am sure that you want to feel deeper connections to yourself and others. You want to feel free and hopeful. You want to make meaning of loss and allow it to move you forward in a healthy way. You want to let go of traumatic responses that keep you stuck. Perhaps you're looking for healing methods that incorporate more than just talk therapy. I see you, and know that I can help you heal.

I believe that every person has the innate ability to cope with the challenges in their lives, but sometimes experiences from the past make it difficult to tap into these abilities. I help folks who have experienced trauma or other overwhelming life stressors discover their inner strength and resiliency. When you are feeling stuck or disconnected from the life you want to lead, I hope to bring my warm presence, empathy, and genuine curiosity to help close the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

I work with people who experience discomfort in a variety of experiences including anxiety, depression, substance use, trauma, self-esteem, identity and relationship struggles.
Let’s figure out what is holding you back and how to move forward in celebrating who you are. We all have parts of ourselves we wish were different, parts of ourselves we are ashamed of or perhaps sad or angry with. Sometimes we start to shape our understanding of ourselves through a narrative that is focused on these parts. My approach is one that uses curiosity to explore, understand and appreciate our unique story. Stories are ways in which we explain and understand our experiences. As your therapist, I will walk alongside you on your journey of exploring your story, rediscovering self and re-writing your story that you value.

Amelia has been a Registered Social Worker for 24 years working with individuals, couples, and families who may have experienced intergenerational trauma or childhood developmental trauma, leading to mental health diagnosis such as anxiety, depression, or borderline personality disorder. As trauma causes stress on the body and conflict within relationships, the lives of the individuals who are struggling to understand why can often feel confused or lost. By giving them the knowledge and skills of how to accept the things they cannot change and to change the things they can control will assist them in building a life worth living.

When how you've coped before isn't working any more, it is time for a different approach. Sessions focus on healing trauma, (re)discovering the strengths you may not feel you have, building a compassionate approach to your self and treating yourself more kindly to discern what wisdom means for you and how to access your practical wisdom for living your life and finding a way through, no matter what you are facing. Symptoms from CPTSD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, burnout, acute stress can be the catalysts for changing your thinking, behaviours and patterns to discover new ways to live your life.

Life isn’t always easy. It can be hard, painful and even traumatic at times. Trauma and difficult life experiences can create challenges in many areas of life - it’s not uncommon to struggle with managing thoughts and emotions, relationships, and responsibilities. We do our best to lean on past ways of coping to help us through, and sometimes must acknowledge when more help is needed. Whether you struggle with emotional issues (anxiety, depression, PTSD, anger, low self-esteem), addiction, grief and loss, or relationship/family issues, I would welcome the opportunity to support your desire for authentic personal growth and healing.

However, my work with clients is guided by an attachment and trauma informed perspective.
When I made the conscious effort to connect emotionally, mentally, and spiritually with myself, others, and my environment, I realized the importance of relationship and the power of sharing our narratives with others. My practice prioritizes nurturing the need to connect. When this connection is made and individuals understand why the body, mind, and spirit respond and react in certain ways, they are ready to learn how to implement skills and strategies.

Hello, and welcome. I'm happy you're here. We move through the world as a sum of our experiences. Some of these experiences have made us feel unsafe, unsettled, or even unappreciated. It’s difficult to live and move when you don’t feel right in your own skin. Do you have goals, plans, or needs that aren't addressed? Let's look at them together. I'm straightforward and compassionate in my approach. I'm convinced what matters is authenticity and being real together while holding space for tender work. American Psychologist Stephen Porges has said “feeling safe is the treatment and creating safety is the work”.

My practice is trauma-informed and attachment-sensitive.
Currently taking new clients! A new year is often a great time to make some much-needed changes. Perhaps you’re dealing with major life changes that you’re not sure how to navigate & could use some guidance. Or, maybe you’re struggling with anxiety, low self-worth, or with romantic or family relationships. Whatever the issue, I’ll teach you effective tools to help you cope, move forward, & get to where you WANT to be. Swearing, loud laughing, and joking are perfectly OK to do in sessions with me! We’ll do more than just talk; I regularly give homework to help you practice skills and learn more about yourself.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
