Hello, my name is Jennifer Adjei, and I work as a Clinical Social Worker. My friends and family will describe me as caring, passionate, understanding, and supportive. I always had a safe space where I could express my emotions, triggers and coping strategies. I am not perfect; I am human, just like you. The difbetween you and me is that I learned tools, skills, theories, modalities, and lessons from my personal and professional life. Daily, I listen to people’s stories, life choices, accomplishments, and struggles. Therapy is about unpacking, unlearning, and relearning to be better. Thank you for letting me be part of your story.

The decision to attend therapy can be challenging. It can produce various emotions such as shame, guilt, and anxiety. What you're feeling is a normal response to facing deep thoughts and emotions. I work with folks from various cultures and ethnicities to unpack unhealed childhood trauma and mental health challenges related to unhealed past trauma. Some of those challenges look like poor boundaries, low self-esteem, interpersonal relationship challenges, anxiety, stress, and racial trauma just to name a few things. We are all unique, which is why you are the expert in your life. I will help you face the truth with self-compassion.

I am a dedicated social worker and therapist who specializes in the mental and emotional health of racialized communities, and has expertise working with Black African Diaspora boys and men. I have a strong commitment to helping people heal through trauma, including African and Indigenous-centered understandings of healing and people of colour whose mental health has been greatly harmed by the effects of colonialism and subsequent marginalization, war, violence and poverty. I help clients heal the mind, an entity that can be so easily damaged by distressing experiences, while fostering an interconnection between mind, body and soul.

You’ve probably spent a lot of time trying to fix things on your own, but maybe you’ve reached a point of exhaustion. You might be feeling overwhelmed, self-critical, & alone. You don’t know what else you can do to make yourself feel better, or how to keep up with the challenges you’re facing. Maybe there are cultural & social challenges that are making your situation worse. Maybe you're tired of running around in circles & have made the decision to see a counsellor so you don’t continue to feel like you’re “going crazy”.

Life is filled with ebbs and flows, ups and downs, and it can be overwhelming at times. I know the last few years have not made it any easier for children, teens or parents. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Unheard? Depressed? Anxious? Are you feeling stressed at work, home, or school? Is your child or youth having challenges at school?

Centre Bethany Centre is a place that provides counselling services that will contribute to the physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological well-being of individuals and families. Our approach is centred around healing in an African cultural context, that is to say, healing is the remedy that is required when something goes wrong with the functioning of the mind, body, psyche, environment and spirit. This malfunction often results in one feeling anxious; abandoned; physically, psychologically and spiritually traumatized; a sense of loss of self.

At times, life can feel so overwhelming that we just wish for a way out of the chaos into stillness and peace. This chaos might manifest in stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues, or it may show up as traumatic and painful experiences preventing you from achieving your desires and goals. It is absolutely possible to find your way to happiness and inner peace and it’s helpful to have a trained professional with lived experience guide and support you through that journey.

As a BIPOC psychotherapist, you hold yourself to high standards because you have the best intentions coming into this career. Yet despite that, there's still a nagging feeling that you're not doing enough or you'd somehow get in trouble with CRPO. Psychotherapy is highly regulated so you aim to meet the standards and practice ethically. You do your research, ask around, review your notes, but you're still unsure and afraid. Not only are you navigating burnout and imposter syndrome, but you also feel shamed by some therapists on Facebook groups who seem to have it so easy and all figured out.

My practice involves co-creating a compassionate space for clients to explore why they might feel stressed, anxious, depressed or a loss of meaning in life. We all in some way, seek to bring relief and meaning to what we have gone through and the challenges we are currently facing. Often times our trauma can keep us in patterns that no longer serve us, hindering our connection to ourselves and others.

Hot take: Everyone can benefit from therapy. I spent years of my life wanting to hide my feelings from the people around me because of the stigma surrounding mental health—particularly as a second-generation Chinese Canadian woman. Once I began to accept these feelings and embrace them as part of the human experience, I was able to embark on a (life-long) journey of healing. When I discovered firsthand how transformative therapy can be, I realized I wanted to work with other individuals in assisting them with their journeys.

As a human being on my own healing and wellness journey, I believe we all have the capacity to heal from and grow through whatever life challenges we may be facing, have faced in the past, or will encounter in the future. But we're not meant to do it alone. As your therapist, sharing a genuine (not clinical feeling) connection is important to me. My aim is to create a warm, affirming and non-judgemental space to share, learn, grow and heal.

The people I often work with are struggling with the feeling that they don't belong anywhere - whether that be with friends, family or at school, or work. They feel like they aren't 'good enough,' to be in the spaces or roles that they are in. Some find their relationships complicated - with friends, family, or romantic partners - where others don’t understand their values and what they want. You deserve to be heard, you deserve to live life on your terms with your values, and you deserve space to belong.

How often have you had to leave parts of yourself (your ethnicity, your queer identity, your mental health) at the door? Sometimes you might need to be someone else in order to feel safe. It can be hard to love and accept yourself, especially when you live in a world where you are told to keep parts of yourself hidden in order to fit in. I know and understand how racism, discrimination, colonial, structural oppression and queer identities can impact our mental health. I am here to create a safe enough space so that you can feel comfortable bringing all that you are and all that you want to be in our sessions.
