However, what has helped me and many of my clients is to find out where we stand and re-connect with our values.
Many of us spend our lives feeling pressured to perform, impress, and constantly optimize ourselves, often wondering, “When will I be enough?” As the world keeps changing, milestones we thought we’d reach by now seem further away, often delayed by the need for more security and stability. If you relate to this, I understand. It’s disheartening and can make hope for the future feel thin. Terms like burnt out, stressed, worried, anxious, depressed, and lonely might resonate deeply with you.

I work primarily with men who are struggling with aspects of their current relationships including feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, substance use, and sexual addictions.
Relationships are hard, and we do not always know how to effectively work through turbulence. Sometimes, we can act in ways that push others away. Other times, we can get pushed away for seemingly no rhyme or reason. In both situations it can feel impossible to find peace, whether that means working towards mending the relationship, or in some circumstances learning how to let go. These complex situations consume a great deal of our time and can leave us feeling sad, anxious, angry, and not like ourselves. Together, we can build healthy and satisfying relationships and get you back to feeling like YOU.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I decided to further my education and pursue a master's degree in counselling psychology. During my graduate studies, I became particularly interested in the effects of trauma on individuals and families. I focused his research and coursework on this area and sought out opportunities to gain hands-on experience working with trauma. I am committed to continuing my education and staying up-to-date on the latest research and techniques in counselling. I am doing work in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and DBT and incorporates aspects of MBCT

I have extensive child and youth experience managing behaviourally and emotionally challenged youth and teaching caregivers how to manage them.
Coming to the realization that reaching out for help is necessary, can be both cathartic and scary. Choosing a counsellor also has its challenges of being the right one. A positive therapeutic bond,or fit with a counsellor, can affect the outcome of the experience. It has been my privilege to help thousands of individuals, couples and groups throughout my lengthy career of 33+ years in Child Welfare, private practise and university settings. I have learned that although we share hu man experiences our uniqueness sets us apart from others. I treat my clients respectfully, with care and unconditional positive regard and advocacy.

I am happy to work with an extensive range of clients and organize my practice around providing Client-Centred Therapy grounded in empirically-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally, I have lived experience as a first responder and am passionate about addressing the unique challenges associated with fulfilling such roles. In my experience working with people over the last 10 years, I've found that often their challenges are best addressed first and foremost by being heard; this act of listening is a gift that unlocks the resources hidden within.

MEN, are you feeling down or chronically stressed/anxious? Struggling to control anger? You may feel disconnected from loved ones or hu manity. Or maybe you feel lost in our rapidly changing society. Challenges unique to men must be met to feel fulfilled and connected, yet most of us never learned how to truly engage in our world and with loved ones. I specialize in helping fellow men (and others) develop and maintain healthy habits and relationships. If you’re looking for a therapist for the first time, I know it can be particularly intimidating; I give careful consideration to this and strive to make it as comfortable as possible.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
