No matter where we are in life, we are vulnerable to experiencing overwhelming and unexpected challenges. Many of us, have moved through life without learning how to manage these difficult emotions in an adaptive and helpful way. As a result, we are prevented from connecting to our true emotional world and reject some of the core parts of ourselves. Left unacknowledged, these parts of ourselves can influence our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and keep us stuck repeating old, unfulfilling patterns.

I would be honoured to walk beside you for a portion of your journey. Many of us have had earlier experiences that impact our ability to work, love, play, or achieve our full potential. By exploring the connections between body, mind and emotions, you can overcome barriers and move forward. You are courageous in taking this first step ... whether you are seeking a psychological assessment for school or work-related challenges, trauma treatment, struggling with mood or anxiety-related concerns, or dealing with LGBTQ-specific questions.

Most of the people you know would say you seem just fine. But really, you feel like you're just going through the motions on autopilot. You put on a smile when you actually feel sad, numb, hopeless, angry, overwhelmed or all of the above. Feelings of fear, shame and guilt guide your choices. You've lost interest in things you used to enjoy and find yourself preferring to stay home and isolate because it just feels easier. Maybe you've started having anxiety and/or panic attacks. Now you can't sleep well and have started to engage in self destructive thoughts and behaviours. You just don’t feel like yourself.

When picturing working with my ideal client, I imagine their issues revoking around anxiety related to their past and their current environment. Their needs are that they want to be able to not think about the worse case scenario or have as many negative automatic thoughts. Their goals are to be happier and begin to look at the bright side rather than being constantly in an anxious state. Being able to think about their past and reflect on what brought them here and how they can change those thought processes. Exploring childhood trauma, together we work to create a new narrative for the client that changes life for them.

Do you suffer from anxiety and/or depression? Are you currently struggling with life's challenges? What about your relationships, are you experiencing difficulties? I believe we all have moments when we need someone to talk to and someone who can understand. Because I am a mature therapist, I am able to blend my life experience with my education and help those who are struggling emotionally, relationally and/or mentally with life's challenges. Furthermore, I believe articulating clear counselling goals and formulating solid treatment plans can help achieve your desired outcomes.

For the last 6 years, I have worked with survivors of trauma - including sexual violence, familial violence, racial trauma, homophobia, among others - to address and process their experiences. My approach to therapy is warm, responsive, playful and transparent. I believe that every person benefits from learning about themselves, and that understanding the process of therapy helps with learning about the self. I meet you where you are (literally, in some ways, as I am offering digital therapy), and believe we can move from there. I want therapy to be useful, and welcome honesty, feedback, and laughter in session.

Life’s stressors can leave us feeling lost, overwhelmed, and disconnected from our true selves. You may find yourself constantly battling negative thoughts, feeling isolated from those who cannot understand your struggle, or burdened by your strife for perfectionism. You may not even remember a time when you didn't feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you are ready for a change! You would like to manage life’s transitions without them overwhelming you. You want to wake up each morning with a sense of calm and purpose. Most of all, you are eager to rebuild your self-esteem and face your future with a renewed sense of hope.

Adlerian Counsellors

How does Adlerian psychology work?

In the framework of Adlerian therapy, people are motivated by a sense of belonging and community, which drives them to surmount feelings of inferiority so as to contribute to their society; fulfilling these desires can help people flourish. Adlerian therapy proceeds in four stages—engagement, assessment, insight, and reorientation—in an overall effort to understand the client’s past and to achieve their present-day humanistic goals.

Is Adlerian therapy humanistic?

Yes, Adlerian psychology is humanistic; it focuses on the whole person, emphasises their strengths rather than just their symptoms, and centers them in determining how they can grow and flourish. This school of thought informed the work of Abraham Maslow, who went on to develop humanistic psychology.

How long does Adlerian therapy take?

Adlerian therapy is a short-term, goal-oriented form of therapy that takes around 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Of course, some people may be in therapy for a shorter or longer time frame; length depends on the individual and the problem or condition they wish to treat. Clients can ask their therapist about the timeline for treatment before they begin and check in periodically to ensure that they’re on the same page in terms of progress.

Is Adlerian therapy evidence based?

There is not as much evidence to support the effectiveness of Adlerian therapy as there is for other types of therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. But Adlerian therapy may be the right therapy for some people—whether they’re seeking to treat mental disorders or achieve self-growth—especially those looking for a holistic approach that emphasises relationships, community, self-worth, and purpose.
