While being grounded in evidence-based practice such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, I maintain an integrative, flexible, and holistic approach.
As your therapist, I will continuously strive to cultivate an authentic connection with you based on trust, empathy, and compassion using a trauma-and-violence informed lens. I believe that by understanding your experiences I can best support you to achieve your goals. My aim is to work in collaboration with you, while holding a safe and non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable to share your experiences. I view therapy as you being the driver, and myself being a passenger working alongside you.

If you’re reading this, you likely don’t want to spend the rest of your life feeling the way you do now. Stressed? Exhausted? Angry? Confused? The past few years have been incredibly difficult. As we continue to navigate in a chaotic world, it’s important to have someone to talk to, someone who can provide needed support. I have over seventeen years of experience working in mental health, including fourteen years in a psychiatric hospital setting. My training is in a number of orientations, with advanced training in mindfulness, meaning-oriented modalities, and an integrated psychodyamic approach (self-in-relationship therapy).

I use evidence-based approaches in my practice including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
Thank you for reaching out - I know that seeking help not always easy and it takes a lot of energy and courage to do so. As an occupational therapist and psychotherapist, I strive to understand how my clients’ “occupations” (i.e. meaningful activities and life roles), are impacted in order to support their emotional health and recovery. My clients learn to identify what their personal strengths are, how their environment influences them and what gives them a sense of purpose in life. We practice coping skills and tools to overcome functional difficulties and increase independence.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
