My therapeutic approach is anchored in anti-oppressive, experiential (meaning based in experience) and trauma-focused principles.
Hello! I'm Anna Lukomsky (she/her), a registered social worker and trauma therapist with over 15 years of experience helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges. Throughout treatment I emphasize safety above all else; guiding people to learn to feel safe in their lives, in their bodies and in sessions with me. I create a supportive environment that fosters personal growth through warmth, humour, compassion, and gentle patience; letting clients set a pace that works best for them; from the very start showing them they have everything they need to heal already within them, waiting to be acknowledged and seen.

Have you become aware of feeling constantly not good enough? Does that Inner Critic in your brain provide a constant inner dialogue of the ways in which you are failing? Do you notice that you are feeling rejected and a sense of abandonment? Are you used to putting yourself last in favour of meeting everyone else’s needs? Are you experiencing anxiety and feel as if you are in a constant state of high alert?Shelley’s approach to therapy is one of a trauma informed perspective and is always client centered. Her goal is to work with her clients in an empathetic, gentle way where She aims to hold a supportive and patient space.

As an individual therapist with extensive experience and training in Emotion Focused, Trauma, and Cognitive Behavioural therapies, we can work together to reach your personal goals.
Do you feel ...overwhelmed? ...numb? ...stressed? ...anxious? ...depressed? ...angry? ...hopeless? ...ashamed? ...lost? ...haunted by the past? ...alone? At times we can become stuck in these painful emotions, and we desperately wish to avoid them. We temporarily block them or distract ourselves only for them to return with a vengeance. Instead, when we turn towards them to hear and heal what is underneath, the painful emotions can be truly transformed. In this way, we can use emotions as a guide and overcome the obstacles in reaching our full potential.

As a trauma-informed psychotherapist I utilize an integrational, attachment-based approach in all of my client work.
Whether you have experienced a recent challenging life event or have been struggling with emotional or relational pain or trauma, I am here to assure you that you are not alone on your journey. Maybe you are experiencing anxiety or depression. Maybe you have experienced difficulties in your relationship with yourself, your partner, or your family. Perhaps you feel lost, without a destination and without a direction. You are not alone. You are resilient! Emotional or psychological wounds and difficulties can be very uncomfortable. Yet discomfort in our present situation can often be the soil which helps us grow, change, and thrive.

My clients have shared that I provide a genuine, non-judgmental presence and atmosphere while they explore their thoughts and emotions, gain insight into their behaviours, and develop effective steps to enhance their well-being. You can expect a therapeutic setting that is professional, yet relaxed.

By becoming aware of your relational patterns (past and present) and emotional responses, you can foster better understanding of yourself and others. With the right support, you can start to heal injured parts and live life with more clarity and insight.

Stress, trauma and attachment injuries leave emotional and physiological imprints on the nervous system.
Is living with a “survival mindset” hindering your daily life and relationships? Are you looking to overcome the root cause of your triggers? Moments of calm and connection can feel fleeting when we are repeatedly hijacked by overwhelm and unmet needs, or trapped in a loop-play of painful past experiences that seem to serve as cautionary lessons. Trauma-informed psychotherapy is an opportunity to reset the blueprint of our nervous system, release old wounds and reprogram outdated belief systems. Together, we lead the way towards feeling safely embodied, becoming at peace in your mind, and finding harmony within.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
