Therapy provides a safe and supportive space for us to work through your concerns around aspects of your experience. The relationship between the therapist and client is based on trust, acceptance, understanding, and confidentiality. I aim to empower each client, to make choices for their own life, which serve them in the ways that they need. I practice from the biopsychosocial approach which recognizes that we all have complex factors which influence our well being. I believe each person has within, unique strengths and gifts to contribute to this world.

It takes an incredible amount of strength to reach out for help. Deciding to embark on the process of change can feel overwhelming and it can be difficult to know where to start. Your process has brought you here to this site and that is already a significant step. Whether you are struggling with a single experience or a lifetime of experiences, therapy can be beneficial. The therapeutic process can be helpful to make sense of your thoughts, identify barriers to change and explore new ways of coping. Therapy can be empowering.

She approaches therapy from a relational, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and queer informed lens that is client focused and draws on evidence based practices.
Kate McDermott primarily works with relationships and families on communication, connection, and collective growth. She strives to create a therapeutic space that is warm, genuine, curious and encouraging. She is here to listen, help you reflect, teach new skills and at times, gently challenge you. Kate believes that small changes can have large impacts on our relational systems. She aims to balance client needs to feel heard, understood and validated with a desire to see and feel change in therapy. Her hope is that you take away a new thought, shift in perspective or strategy to try from each session.

Embracing my identity as a queer man, I warmly welcome individuals from all backgrounds.
Life is an ever-shifting sea, where the currents of growth and transformation carry us on a journey of self-discovery. At times, we may find ourselves adrift, uncertain of our shores and longing for a sense of direction. In these moments, therapy can be an anchor, grounding us and helping us navigate the vast ocean of possibilities. Just as a skilled mariner binds a knot that secures a sail, I believe that each person possesses the innate ability to thread together their own unique narrative of healing and transformation. Through the therapeutic process, we can mend the frayed edges of our being, with compassion and resilience.

Are you someone that identifies as LGBTQ+, seeking an outlet to express one’s worries? Are you a racialized person struggling to find someone you can speak to about life challenges? Have you reached a roadblock in your communication with a romantic partner? LGBTQ+ and racialized folks are often limited in spaces that allow them to feel fully seen. With couples, there are often difficulties figuring out where to start in managing conflict. Through a collaborative therapeutic stance, I am to challenge such difficult realities by supporting clients to fulfill their desired goals.

As an openly gay man living in Toronto with my husband, dog & cat, I believe in equality of all humans.
How you feel, matters. Therapy isn't for someone who has it worse than you, you owe it to yourself to reach for the support you need to thrive. You could be looking for support during a difficult time or recovery after a difficult ending or experience. You might have some confusion as to why things are going wrong in your relationships, which you hope to strengthen or repair or end. Perhaps the pandemic turned life upside-down and you are finding your balance again. Maybe you feel disconnected, alone or have suffered in a relationship with someone who does and are looking for a therapist who can understand what's happening.

I also conduct psychodiagnostic assessments, learning disability and ADHD assessments, and assessments and referrals for transgender clients seeking gender-affirming medical interventions.
I believe that many symptoms are adaptations intended to provide temporary relief from painful circumstances. However in the longer term, these adaptations can exacerbate distress. My practice focuses on helping people to develop more sustainable ways of coping, including examining your beliefs, accepting difficult emotions, and increasing self-awareness. Issues I work with include PTSD, eating disorders, body image, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and overwhelming emotions. I also work with clients exploring their gender identity and sexual orientation.

I work with many different populations navigating different topics, but my specialty is working with queer populations, and especially people of diverse and expansive genders.
Every single person, no matter their challenges or situation, has intrinsic value and worth. This is why I believe it is vital to work from a strengths-based stance, and why I spend the time to assess everyone's individual talents, skills, and unique strengths. I believe diversity is beautiful, and that part of my role is to collaborate with your personal knowledges. I utilize an anti-oppressive lens to better understand how systems and power structures impact your life, and work to help you navigate this world. Everyone is deserving of supportive, safe health care.

Together we will explore the challenges you are facing and identify and manage the symptoms you are experiencing. As a therapist, I strive to provide a safe place for all people that promotes growth and self love, and I am here to remind you that you are a priority. As a South Asian therapist, I recognize and value the vulnerability and strength that it takes to reach out for support, especially with the stigma that surrounds mental health.
I have provided therapeutic services to people from marginalized communities, different socio-economic backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals with a variety of diagnoses.
Do you feel overwhelmed or weighed down by your emotions? Are you struggling to connect with others and yourself? Do you need help healing from past trauma? I am here to listen. LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
