I am also a somatic therapist, which is a bottom-up approach to healing.
Hi, I'm Sam! I specialize in trauma, sexuality, gender and relationships. I see individuals and couples who want to heal trauma, create meaningful relationships or embrace pleasurable sexuality. If you're here, it may be because you're looking to reclaim your life and pleasure from sexual or relationship trauma, or that your sexual behaviours feel out of control or out of sync with your ethics. Or maybe you want to recapture the spark and intimacy in your relationship, or are navigating non-monogamy or polyamory. Whatever the reason, I'd be honoured to support you on your sexual healing journey.

Blending "bottom-up" somatic with "top-down" cognitive framing can create a holistic understanding of self and a bespoke roadmap for change.
Have you worked hard to change the way you think and yet struggle to change the way you feel? I may be able to help you. I am an RP in fully independent practice, and I believe that holistic, meaningful and lasting change can occur when we weave our body and our mind's voices and experiences into the narrative of who we are and who we aspire to be. If you have ever listened to your "gut" instinct, soothed yourself using breath or felt the urge to move to a favourite song, you have experienced the benefit of the mind-body connection! Together, we will deepen this connection therapeutically to encourage relief, change and growth.

This is done through developing collaborative relationships, engaging in somatic work, and helping you create your own pathways to repair.
Gender-based violence, restorative approaches and narrative therapy have led me to work internationally. Locally, I have spent 25 years working for a trauma-informed community-based organization and for the past fifteen I have also worked for the Canadian Armed Forces. Currently I continue to speak publicly and train others about domestic violence. I co-founded the Canadian Domestic Violence Conference when I saw a need to bring more light to the subject. I am available to help couples work through the damages caused by domestic violence as well as to help individuals repair the harm done to them so they can move forward.

The therapies that resonate for me are rooted in anti-oppressive, somatic approaches, alongside nervous system, trauma focused and attachment therapies.
Currently accepting new clients! At times life can make us feel far away from ourselves and when that happens each day can feel challenging. Together I hope our work brings about new understanding of yourself as well as compassion for the ways our adaptive bodies and brains function to protect and connect us. In therapy I like to use laughter, curiosity, and genuine connection to build therapeutic relationship. I offer both virtual individual therapy and in person therapy in Almonte Ontario (just outside of Kanata).

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
