I’m specialized in tailoring exposure and response prevention (ERP) for clients who are experiencing symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) such as intrusive thoughts and images, avoidance, and compulsive/safety-seeking behaviours.
Do you want your life back? Intrusive thoughts, images, urges and behaviours alongside overwhelming anxiety can leave many people suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) wondering whether things will ever be different. You may have struggled for years with thoughts that you can't tell anyone about because they're so disturbing and culturally taboo. You might even wonder whether you have OCD at all, leading you to doubt yourself so severely that depression has also become part of your everyday.

My practice is centred on the assessment and treatment of OCD, PTSD, fear and anxiety disorders, depression, and ADHD.
We all confront difficult challenges in life. We all go through times when our deepest fears and insecurities surface and wield control over our thoughts and actions, while our strengths and values fade out of focus and out of reach. We may be flooded with unwanted and worrisome thoughts; experience intense negative emotions; feel lonely and isolated from others, become increasingly unmotivated and unproductive; and develop difficulties sleeping, concentrating, and finding fulfillment in life. If you are going through a period of suffering, this is part of what makes you human.

As a trained psychotherapist, my experiences include working one-on-one with people dealing with depression, anxiety, personal concerns, relationship issues, grief and loss, trauma, low self-esteem, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessional-compulsive disorder (OCD), guilt and shame, and issues around spirituality.
My treatment approach guides people through a self-examination into how they experience themselves, their relationships and their world. Symptoms are relieved through increased personal insight and finding new ways of perceiving old situations, allowing for the development of healthier behaviours. I view the therapist-client relationship as truly unique - one that can help, in a lasting way, to heal and steer personal relationships.

Imagine anxiety like a small bubble, that we see and can recognize is there (ex. what if this happens in the future). Over time, as a result of not coping with anxious thoughts and engaging in behaviours like avoidance, that bubble can expand and start to really limit your daily living. It's important to have a therapist that specializes in anxiety, and can understand and identify safety behaviours that may be holding you back! We work with a wide range of anxiety problems including phobias (e.g. emetophobia, driving phobia), generalized anxiety, OCD, health anxiety, panic attacks, and social anxiety.

These brains of ours don't come with instruction manuals - figuring out how to navigate life is tough enough, but can sometimes seem impossible when we experience mental health difficulties. I specialize in working with people with BPD (attachment trauma), anxiety disorders, OCD, couples and people with complex difficulties who may have been given multiple diagnoses. Therapy can be a strange process, I try to make it simple and straightforward. We get to know each other, and figure out if we’re a good fit. We get a clear picture of what the problems are, and what’s going wrong (and what’s going right) in your life.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
