Triena’s practice is continually evolving as she integrates Mindfulness, Interpersonal Neurobiology and Therapeutic Practices, DBT, CBT, ASIST, IFS, SFBT, Trauma Aware Care, ERP, Collaborative Law-Family Professional and other tools and trainings to support those she serves.
My name is Triena McGuirk and I am a Social Worker in private practice. Over the course of my experiences, I have come to learn with certainty that life is chaotic and the one thing we truly have control over is how we respond. I walk with people of all ages during life’s challenging moments, when the path is not visible. My goal as a Therapist is to assist those I serve (individuals, couples and families) in reconciling the discomfort of their experience and harness the wisdom it carries to invite more of what aligns into your life. I am diligent and resourceful in my pursuit of helping and hope those I serve leave our time

My approach blends several types of therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy and psychoeducation.
Eating disorders and exercise disorders have devastating effects on the individual suffering and those close to them. As a registered psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of eating and exercise disorders and co-occurring issues, I work collaboratively with clients to meet their own individual therapeutic needs as they bravely journey into full recovery. While I specialize in treating eating disorders, approximately half of my clients come to me with different concerns. I also use mindfulness, relaxation and guided imagery techniques to support clients along their counselling journey.
At times life can be demanding and stressful, even more so if you feel alone and are unsure who to turn to for support and help. But no one should feel like they have to figure everything out on their own. I believe that every person is the expert of their own life but sometimes we need a new perspective or a safe space to talk, open up, and feel heard. As a counsellor, I offer my clients a non-judgmental, empathic, supportive space to fully explore their inner self, thoughts and feelings on their personal journey towards growth and healing.

I support people living with invisible health challenges to live their lives to the fullest. If you're living with a mood issue, pain or fatigue, I'm interested in supporting you to get back to your daily life. I don't just focus on the work day! I address getting out in the community, social time, leisure, personal care, household tasks, sleep and anything else that you need or want to do with your time. As part of my treatment, I often partner with nature to support your recovery. That means we can have appointments walking and talking in a natural setting if that suits you. I can also bring mindfulness practice into our sessions.

I integrate play therapy, mindfulness, ACT and CBT.
Do you feel overwhelmed by events, feelings, people? Do you struggle with your daily tasks, interacting with others, and managing your emotions? Does it feel like you are in a repetitive loop, unable to break free, no matter how hard you try to get out? This situation might be draining and overwhelming to deal with alone. Maybe it is time to approach all these questions in a secure environment. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with a non-judgmental and compassionate person, able to walk with you on the path of self-discovery, might help you reach your full potential and self-accomplishment.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
