Since 2005, I have worked with adults seeking support based on concerns related to difficulties with negative emotions (like anger, anxiety, depression, or shame), behaviours that impact their work or relationships (like aggression, addictions, or compulsions), or patterns in their relationships that prevent them from feeling good about themselves or developing more satisfying connections. I will help you explore the origins of these concerns and work with you to emancipate yourself from these struggles.

Change starts with the relationship that we form in the therapy and then continues by building useful skills in and outside of our sessions. In practice this means that I fit best with clients who are interested in (1) understanding more about their thoughts and emotions while also (2) taking clear steps to improve their mental and physical well-being. My job as the therapist is to provide a warm and caring environment to support the client in this process.

As a man, emotions and sharing them often create barriers for relationships with others and with ourselves. Support around emotional awareness for men is important to help build a better connection with all aspects of our lives. Being able to share and communicate who we "really" are is vital to a fulfilling life. I help men deal with emotional awareness. Supporting men to work through their own emotional histories and how that effects them daily is the key to connecting to your true "self". We need to address issues, like Trauma, Addiction and Shame, to help you understand the roots of emotional identity and its effects today.

Starting therapy can be daunting but it’s one of the best investments you can make in yourself. I strive to create a non-judgemental, collaborative space guided by compassionate curiosity in which we can explore your fears, anxieties, relationships and general life challenges. Working together, we explore new ways of understanding your inner self, your world and your relationships and examine old patterns that may no longer serve you well and seek to create new ones that are more effective.

Sometimes the ways in which we have learned to manage challenges in life end up pulling us away from the authentic life that we want to live. Feelings like anxiety and shame can show up and leave us feeling helpless and disconnected from ourselves and others. We often end up shaming ourselves for feeling a certain way rather than taking the time to understand our feelings and needs. If you are struggling and feeling stuck in patterns that are no longer serving you, I am here to help you find the courage within yourself to meet your suffering with understanding and compassion.

Life is so complicated! Do we need anxiety and depression to add to our list of issues? Stress from our jobs, partners, spouses and family dysfunction just add to the list of everyday pressures. Add childhood and early life traumas and the plate is already overwhelming. Our goal is to thrive in today’s crazy world and overcome the stubborn obstacles that hold us back from emotional happiness.

Disconnected. Broken. Hopeless. Powerless. Stuck. Many men tell me this is how they feel in our first session. Taking the first step to make change in your life and accept support can sometimes feel the most challenging and overwhelming. As a male therapist, I have learned that working with men requires a focus on practical solutions, a safe and comfortable environment, a therapist who understands the unique personal and societal challenges men face, an emphasis on self-compassion and self-acceptance, and a willingness to address underlying issues. At the end of the day, therapy is about being listened to, being heard. There may be difficult experiences in your life that you are carrying alone right now. I can assure you, it doesn’t have to be that way. My job as therapist is to make it easy to sit with and explore the difficult stuff. I do this by removing many of the barriers that ever made it hard: by listening attentively without judgement, meeting you wherever you’re at, and showing up with patience, curiosity, and compassion. In this, I support clients to build new habits and change their relationship with themselves and others for the better.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
