I offer individual therapy for teens and adults and relationship therapy for couples from various backgrounds, including LGBTQIA2S+ and ethically non-monogamous couples. Many of my clients experience anxiety, depression, work-related stress, relationship challenges, parenting concerns, or the uncertainty that comes with life transitions. These struggles can affect your well-being, making it hard to navigate daily tasks, maintain healthy connections, or feel at peace with yourself. I understand how overwhelming these issues can feel, and I offer a compassionate space where you can explore these challenges and begin to heal.

Maybe you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and frustrated by just getting through the day or are you questioning how life could be better? Now more than ever parents are feeling overwhelmed by all their roles and relationships, parents feel uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers and their lives. We often feel like we would like to change things in our lives, be a better parent or spouse or learn how to cope better with the way we manage stress. Having a deeper understanding of mental health and how it affects our mind and body can allow us to work towards healthier solutions to improve our lives.

My experience includes trauma-based therapies such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), as well as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), motivational interviewing, narrative therapy techniques, collaborative problem solving and positive parenting strategies.
I offer in-office counselling through Dandelion Counselling in Orillia. I am a counselor who utilizes a holistic and eclectic approach because I recognize that no single modality meets everyone’s needs in a meaningful way. I value creating a collaborative, therapeutic relationship and I meet clients where they are at in the present moment whether they are seeking a safe, non-judgmental space to explore their thoughts, feelings and needs, or have specific goals that they want to address.

You’ve noticed your child’s behaviour has changed recently and it concerns you. You want to support them in this fast-paced and competitive world, but you’re not sure how. You want to understand them, but it feels you’re hitting a wall whenever you try to reach them. And you’re getting tired of trying. For children and youth, growing up involves changes that impact their well-being and their self-esteem. With attentive and empathetic support, their ability to cope with these changes can bring them confidence. But without the right support, they can internalize ideas about themselves and their relationships that cause them pain.

We all have times when we feel weighed down by our thoughts and feelings and this can often keep us from connecting with others or creating boundaries that we know are important. You might feel like you are stuck, but there is hope and you are not alone. In our work together, you will learn strategies to change the relationship you have with your thoughts and feelings. I use a non-judgmental and supportive approach to highlight your existing strengths and support you along your healing journey.

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
