A foundational approach to all my work is teaching the importance of present moment awareness, and I will typically begin to interweave various principles of informal mindfulness skills into our very first session together.
I am a Registered Psychotherapist, and also a Registered Nurse who specializes in the treatment of adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, sexual concerns, and trauma. Using an integrative approach, I can help you learn how to let go of old patterns that no longer work, and manage the fear and uncertainty that often arises from some of life’s greatest challenges such as illness, separation/divorce, or the death of a loved one. I take a special interest in supporting professionals who work in highly challenging environments by helping them to increase their psychological flexibility and manage workplace stress.

I use a blend of therapeutic approaches that I've found really work with the complexity of our human experience-things like emotionally focused therapy, attachment theory &mindfulness to name a few.
Take a deep breath—you've already taken the first step by considering therapy. I know life can feel like a whirlwind sometimes, especially when it comes to relationships with ourself and others and figuring out our place in the world. It's like we're all navigating this maze of emotions and experiences, trying to make sense of it all. I want you to know that you're not alone in feeling overwhelmed by everything. I've been there too, grappling with the same questions about my own behaviour, my connections with others, and where I fit in this big, sometimes overwhelming, world. That's why I approach therapy in a way that's deeply

My theoretical approach is eclectic using techniques of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centered, Existential, Mindfulness Self Compassion, Narrative and Solution Focused Therapies.
If your thoughts, actions, and emotions have formed a mental ‘block’ keeping you back, you are not alone. Many individuals have these concerns as a result of a trauma, stress, fear, or are heightened by anxiety, shame, betrayal, or other mental health issues. You want to address these issues using proven psychotherapeutic methods as provided by a registered mental health professional. This would be supported through a therapeutic relationship with the professional where client feelings will be validated and they can share their thoughts and concerns through trust in a safe environment free of judgement, criticism, fear, or disdain.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
