I focus on helping clients that struggle with chronic illness, low self worth, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
I understand that life is full of challenges, and you shouldn’t have to face them all by yourself. My passion lies in helping you learn to accept yourself as you are, reinforcing the belief that your daily presence is 100% enough. As a therapist, and a certified yoga teacher, I’m committed to fostering a mind-body connection in our sessions. I believe that our bodies store our experiences, traumas and feelings, and express them through important body cues in our nervous system. As humans, we are the product of our experiences and I look forward to working through them with you, through a culturally sensitive, trauma-focused lens.

Life's journey often presents us with challenges that can feel overwhelming and persistent. Just as the tide shapes the shoreline, our experiences with trauma, relationships, anxiety, depression, grief, and chronic illness can reshape our sense of self and well-being. I believe in the transformative power of therapy, where even the most consistent patterns can evolve. Using a blend of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, trauma-informed therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I guide my clients through these changes.

I had been a medical doctor before I became a psychologist. I changed professions because I realized that our thoughts, feelings, and behavioural habits have a powerful effect on our health and happiness but their potential to aid healing is often neglected in medicine. I feel privileged to work with clients who are on the journey of recovery and self-growth during and after adversities. I work with clients who have sleep problems, fatigue, stress, low mood, depression, anxiety, panic, chronic worry, obsessive thinking, post-concussion syndrome, medical illnesses, or chronic pain.

Our lives are filled with constant changes, transitions, and adaptions - how do you deal with them now? Is there another way you want to deal? Living in such a multicultural and multilingual society can make these natural happenings in life difficult. I believe when we find a centre, a feeling of being grounded, connected, and heard, everything else becomes a little less difficult to work through. This sense of a centre or grounding is unique for each of us - maybe you need thorough planning, maybe it's more going with the flow. We can figure this out together.

Oftentimes our deepest struggles reveal larger questions that we all ask ourselves at some point in life: What is my purpose? Do I have any worth or value? What is the meaning of my life? Does anyone see me? The unpredictability of life can be blindsiding, leaving us feeling empty, lost, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed and discouraged. Whether you have lost a loved one, are feeling burnout, are overwhelmed in a life transition, uncertain about the future, find yourself in the cycle of addiction, or are struggling with emotions that you have never experienced before, this one reality remains the same: change is possible.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
