There may be times where a person may feel so overwhelmed by their feelings or external circumstances that they are crippled from living the life that they desire and yearn for. These feelings or external circumstances may present themselves as negative thoughts, anxiety, depression, traumatic events, family dynamics and so much more. There is a need and desire for a safe space where one can process through external circumstances and how they impacted them; navigate through those difficult and overwhelming emotions with empathy and compassion; and where they can be their authentic selves without the worry of judgement or rejection.

We all come from vastly unique life experiences and identities, and there is no “one size fits all” way to heal and grow. I take an eclectic approach to therapy that is guided by my clients' individual needs. My practice is influenced by relational, narrative, experiential, and existential modalities, which I have a keen interest in integrating with creative and somatic techniques. I strive to create a therapeutic environment that values warmth, curiosity, and collaboration. I work through the lens of an intersectional feminist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed framework that centers you as the expert of your own experiences.

It is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed by emotions; to want to push away things that bring pain; and to want to act in ways that may hurt in the long run, but help in the moment. In her clinical work, Dr. Laura believes in the power of emotions but understands that neurobiological differences, trauma, mental illness, and the demands of daily life can make sitting with painful emotions extremely challenging. Her work often focuses on helping people learn to examine and accept their feelings, strengths and challenges, and identity and act in ways that improve their lives and the lives of their children.

Human beings are multidimensional; we are physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. Each of us weighs in differently regarding the importance that we place on these. With that said, our history both personal and cultural has impacted these aspects of ourselves. While our stories and identities are not a monolith, what we do share is a profound desire and need for healing.

You wake up each morning with a swirl of emotions – some days with an anxious pit in your stomach, other days with a heavy weight on your chest. You often feel overwhelmed, not just by the grand narratives of culture and identity, but by the daily stresses that mount up unnoticed. High expectations, perhaps from family, peers, or even yourself. You're seeking guidance, understanding, and strategies tailored to your unique journey. Not just any therapist will do. You’re searching for someone who gets the complexities of walking between two worlds, someone who can truly say, "I understand."

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
