Female Therapists in Newmarket, ON
Sometimes in life we can feel stuck - stuck in the way we think, the way we feel, what we do, what we don't do. It happens to all of us because we are human, and something is calling our attention to change or shift things. This can be overwhelming, saddening, frustrating, downright unpleasant. Therapy can provide the opportunity to reflect on what we're experiencing and create new ways of being - from a place of "stuckness" we can create movement.

Challenging and traumatic life experiences can leave people feeling stuck, isolated, and disconnected from themselves and the world around them. Anxiety, negative self-talk, flashbacks, dissociation, withdrawal from life, and sleep issues are just some of the ways in which experiences from our past can impact our present. I have spent over 10 years working with people who have been impacted by domestic abuse and intimate partner violence, sexual assault, childhood trauma, and the sudden and traumatic loss of a loved one.

My compassionate side, with a little humour thrown in for good measure, makes difficult feelings a little easier to navigate. We can use conversation, movement, art, music or role play during our sessions—whatever interests you.

In life we can feel stuck, alone, overwhelmed, confused, misunderstood, unprepared….maybe at a crossroads. I believe that we all have the answers for ourselves within our Selves, and that sometimes we need help to bring clarity, peace, acceptance, understanding. It is important to be SEEN and HEARD. As an avid lifelong learner working for over 20 years in long-term care, disabilities, community services and psychotherapy, I am drawn to supporting adults and families experiencing neurodivergence challenges, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, medical trauma or chronic trauma, grief, and those facing significant life transitions.

Life can be unpredictable and complex, which makes us feel stuck in the spot that we are standing on. We may be able to cope momentarily, but realize that we are cycling through the same patterns unable to find solid ground. This can feel overwhelming, frustrating, and lonely. One of the first steps you can take from where you are standing is the ability to reach out for support through therapy. In this space, you can begin the process toward greater healing and freedom, turning your hopeless end into endless hope. While our past and circumstances have influenced our present, it does not have to dictate our future.

We've all experienced moments of irritability, gloominess, discomfort, and feeling out of sorts without fully understanding why. Worse yet, we often endure these feelings alone, impacting our social connections and personal lives. This is often because a significant portion of our stress and emotions stems from difficult experiences and the struggle to balance responsibilities with our desire for peace and enjoyment. These feelings may arise from the unconscious influence of challenging childhood experiences. If you've read this far, it might be a sign that you're ready to seek support and explore solutions.

Psychotherapy is about understanding those aspects of your unconscious mind that feel like they are holding you back. In other words, what is it that causes you to think and act in ways that you know are harmful or unhealthy and that seem out of your control? With therapy we have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of who we are, what internal motivations drive us, and why. This knowledge can positively affect the way we see and feel about ourselves. We can use it to change how we behave and relate to others.

At times, life can feel complex and challenging for all of us. However, finding a therapist who is a good fit for your individual needs can feel very reassuring. The therapeutic relationship between you and your therapist is an important aspect in determining the efficacy of your therapeutic experience. I have a Masters in Social Work, and I am a Registered Social Worker with more than 15 years of psychotherapy and case management experience. Although I am primarily attachment-based in my approach, I integrate other treatment modalities to accommodate a client's individual needs for therapy.

Trauma, addiction, and mental health struggles are all too familiar for countless people in Canada. These challenges often feel like overwhelming mountains, blocking the light and making it hard to see the path ahead. Yet, there is no reason for anyone to walk this path alone. My approach to holistic care is neither formulaic nor prescriptive. Rather, it is compassionate and patient. I blend evidence-based therapies, such as CBT, ACT, DBT with somatic techniques and energy medicine to nurture and support one meaningful step at a time.

Events happen in our lives at times and we seem not to be able to get around it or even understand it. Many times, we don’t even seem to know our ways through it. Outside we appear to have everything all together but deep within, we are hurting, frustrated, overwhelmed and even seen unsure about how to move forward. Deep within you know that these events have had negative impact on you and even the way you think. You are wondering where and how to get the needed help and tools to walk you through. You are at a point where you are feeling stuck and seems like there is no way out. I want to let you know that there is treasure in you

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
