“Lost”, “Stuck”, “Overwhelmed”, are these words you would use to describe your life? Do you feel like you're standing still while others are passing you by, but you don’t know how or where to move forward? Life throws us many difficult challenges, especially when in our teens and early adulthood. Young people today are faced with balancing pressures from family, friends, school, work, and society, all while trying to find a path in life. Trying to navigate the stress coming at you from multiple angles can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and can make it hard to have good relationships.

Our struggles with life and mental health often make us forget how to offer compassion and kindness to ourselves. While we "demonize" our body's response to seemingly easy "routine" functions, therapy can help us understand & recognize how our experiences have shaped our survival strategies and ways of being. My practice is grounded in my work in community-based mental health programs, as well as lived experience of systemic issues. I draw on EMDR, internal family systems, somatic and anti-oppressive approaches, based on the individual/couple's needs. I have specialized training in working with trauma, abuse and relationships.

Fortunately, ISTDP is an advanced psychotherapy approach that has shown to be effective in treating mental health issues that are resistant to other forms of therapy. Are you a young person or adult looking to talk to someone about how you have been feeling? Sometimes accessing therapy can be scary to have to face uncomfortable conversations! Especially when we have to talk about some of the icky feelings and emotions we have been managing over time. I am open-minded and understand young people's experiences due to possible self-esteem challenges, peer pressure, identity concerns, and family conflict.

Life is a journey and an adventure, though it may be a difficult one at times. At one point or another, we may feel stuck, or overwhelmed, or on edge, or burnt out, or reaching our wits end with the struggles and issues we are dealing with, or a combination or all of the above ... We feel like we can't do this on our own. But we don't have to.

Engaging in psychotherapy is a brave step towards reconciling with one's past, making amends with others, and finding peace with oneself. It's a unique relationship that lays the foundation for healing all other relationships. Psychotherapy, in its core, is a spiritual journey—a pilgrimage into the self. Just as a pilgrim walks from temple to temple, seeking enlightenment, an individual's therapeutic journey may involve multiple therapists. I might be your current one, but perhaps not your first nor your last. Each leg of this journey, with each therapist, requires courage and a faith that transformation is attainable.

Have you tried therapy before for PTSD and trauma symptoms and found you hit a plateau, as if something was missing? Are you looking for a different approach? Do you suspect your trauma experience(s) may be impacting your sexual expression - like having low desire, dissociating during intimacy, or struggling to enjoy pleasure? Have you been diagnosed with things like anxiety or panic disorder, or BPD, but think these are a result of your trauma? Or, perhaps you are feeling as though watching porn or seeking sex has gotten out of control and you are looking for someone to talk to about it who isn't going to shame you.

How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
