I work most frequently with people experiencing anxiety, relationship issues, family conflict, life transitions and have a special interest in working with clients struggling with self-identity and self-esteem.
Attempting to avoid painful or distressing thoughts and feelings is natural - we all do it. However, the more we struggle with and try to control our emotional experiences, the more challenges it creates. As a Registered Social Worker with the OCSWSSW, I utilize a client-centered approach and draw mainly on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Polyvagal Theory to guide my work with clients. Noticing and naming our feelings is the first step to gaining more control over our bodies and learning to live a meaningful life that aligns with our values and goals.

It is important to remember that there are many resources to help you and your family.
Everyone is unique and encounters different life experiences. Some of these experiences change the ways we think, feel, and act. Children and youth might begin to say negative things about themselves, start to struggle with school performance and peer relationships, react easily and in ways that seem bigger than the situation, and experience physical changes like headaches or stomach aches. Another component of these changes involves looking at how adults are processing their responses to them. It is important for adults to know that supporting a child or youth, in addition to themselves, is not something they have to face alone.

Of particular interest to me are the concerns and issues that arise from difficult or changing family relationships, including the challenges of family transitions such as coping with or parenting through loss or divorce, the unique experiences of parenting children and youth with special needs, and the blending of families.
In my practice, I take an integrative approach in therapy to address issues of anxiety, depression, difficulties managing relationships, emotions, grief and trauma. I believe that experiences in our families and early relationships have an important role in shaping who we are, our thoughts, feelings and beliefs, and influence how we are affected by our experiences throughout our lives. Understanding our attachment experiences, our own needs in relationships, and how we can learn to cope with emotions will help us make the changes we want in our lives. In September I am inviting a doctoral level psychology resident into my practice.

During sessions my hope is that we can work collaboratively to discuss what works best for you and your family to alleviate stress and build connection.
My focus is on establishing a safe and nurturing environment where children, youth and families can freely express themselves, explore emotions, and develop the necessary skills to continue to navigate life’s complexities. Recognizing the crucial role families play in the well-being of children and youth, my work extends beyond the individual to encompass close collaboration with their families and support networks. By fostering strong partnerships and equipping parents and caregivers with the knowledge and tools they need, we can build an environment that encourages growth and resilience.

Grief is unique for every individual. There are many different losses that individuals experience, but the commonality is that grief can be debilitating, lonely and isolating. I accompany clients on their journey of processing multiple forms of grief that can include death loss, pet loss, traumatic loss and/or chronic sorrow. I offer in-person, virtual and telephone sessions. I also am available to provide support to clients in a counselling capacity specific to mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, self esteem, family conflict).

Counselling can help you to develop a different relationship with the “chatter” in your head that tells you that you ”aren’t good enough” and that keeps you from daring greatly. It can help you to look at the stories in your life that counter your shame—and give them a voice. It can help you to acknowledge and accept loss in a compassionate manner as you would want for a friend. It can help you to recognize your relationship with your mental health and how you interact with it. It allows you to sort through your values and support you living in a way that aligns with what you want. Counselling looks to support these and more.

Family Therapy Counsellors
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
