I utilize an integrative approach drawing from narrative therapy, attachment theory, and strengths-based therapy to ensure you receive personalized care.
Hello, thank you for reading my profile. My passion is to help you feel more fulfilled, empowered, and present in your life. Life is hard, trauma is real, and inequality is systemic. I provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to feel how you feel, as you come to better understand your thoughts, experiences, and relationships. I believe we each possess unique inner strengths and resources to help us move through life and get out of our heads (and into the moment). My personal and ongoing experience with grief allows me to meet you 'where you are', at your own pace, as we co-develop strategies that work for you.

I have trained in several areas of humanistic and integrative psychotherapy including dialectic behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, narrative therapy, emotionally focused therapy, motivational interviewing, family systems therapy, couples therapy and gestalt therapy.
I believe you are the expert in your life and even though you may not know it, you have all the answers within you. Unfortunately sometimes life can make accessing these answers difficult. Trauma, mental health issues, addiction, work and family pressures can all impact our ability to connect to our inner wisdom and happiness. I have found through personal experience that talking to a trained professional in psychotherapy who is kind, caring, non judgmental and emotionally attuned can support the process of being able to listen to ourselves and reduce our suffering. I work with a team of therapists at Spacious Mind Counselling.

My work is informed by solution-focused, narrative, cognitive-behaviour, mindfulness, and psychodynamic approaches to emotional healing and behavioural change.
Life can challenge us in ways that leave us feeling overwhelmed and in emotional pain. Sometimes we need help to get back on track. Counselling is an opportunity to feel safe, respected, heard and appreciated for who you really are. It is a place to get perspective on your life, learn coping skills and to explore solutions that work for you.

Specifically, I have developed a deep appreciation for person-centered approaches, I incorporate a holistic view of health, and I understand the therapeutic effects of a narrative approach.
I believe you (my client or possible future client) to be the expert in your own life, and I am the passenger on your road to healing. As a passenger, it’s not my place to howl at you to turn left or slow down. But I will keep you company, I will help you navigate, and I will point out stop signs and animals running into the road. Clients I’ve worked with like that I am welcoming, positive, and inviting, and that I understand their stories without judgement.

I regularly intertwine other models such as ACT, DBT, CBT, and narrative therapy into sessions as well.
Are you someone who identifies as highly sensitive, struggles with people pleasing, or has difficulty setting boundaries and often feels burnt out as a result? I am here to support individuals and families facing anxiety, emotional challenges, trauma, and relationship concerns. My goal is to help clients increase self-awareness, transform old narratives that no longer serve them, and discover more balanced ways to navigate the ebbs and flows of life. I have a special interest in working with adolescents and young adults who are navigating these often complicated challenges, fostering a more curious and compassionate sense of self.

In it I combine narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral theory, creating a collaborative relationship and process.
Many challenges we face are inevitable, but often we can sway the outcomes in our favor, keep challenges from compounding each other, and avoid other problems altogether. That is the philosophy I carry into my work helping my clients – from teens to adults – with challenges like ADHD, OCD, learning disabilities, autism, depression, anxiety, postpartum depression, race-based trauma, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, and other concerns. My promise is to provide you a compassionate, open, culturally-affirming, and empowering counselling environment.

A first step in challenging our shame and struggle with self-acceptance can be to take the risk of allowing someone to witness our vulnerability. A counsellor can act as this witness, holding compassion in a safe and non-judgmental space. My counselling style is guided by the principle that we inherently have the inner resources to meet life’s challenges from a place of empowerment. I work from feminist, narrative, anti-oppression, and person-centered frameworks.

In my work I draw from Jungian and Narrative perspectives, as well as my Native American heritage, Buddhist meditation practice, and my experience as a writer, poet, and mother.
I believe that effective therapy takes place in an atmosphere of safety, respect, and caring. When a person comes to therapy, a healing process is already underway. As this process is recognized and strengthened, the client is free to move toward wholeness. I use empathic listening and questions to help clarify the presenting problem and set it in the context of the person's life journey with its healthy call for spiritual and psychological growth. Writing, guided visualization, role playing and art may also be used to bring forth inner wisdom and to explore alternative ways to meet challenges.

Not accepting new clients
I am committed to creating safe spaces for clients where they can gain self-awareness, confidence, and compassion for themselves. Walking into a session with me you can expect a judgement-free zone where there are no wrong questions, reactions, or emotions. I am able to meet clients where they are at, so for me, an ideal client is anyone who is curious about themselves and the challenges they may be having, and who is open to meaningful conversation around these pieces. My passion lies in walking alongside others as they share their stories, gain perspective, and reclaim parts of their narrative that no longer serve them.

I am skilled in talk-modalities like CBT, DBT, EFT, narrative, existential, solution-focused brief therapy, and spiritually-integrated psychotherapy, which also can help clients.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you or someone you love is suffering in some way. But the good news is that things will get better, and I hope to help you (or them) get to better times. I work with adults, young adults, youth, and children, and have done so for the past decade (and it’s been the best decade of my life so far). The challenges we work on include depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, coping with life changes, and many more. If you or someone you love could use a friendly ear and a helping hand, you may find the therapy modalities I am trained in helpful.

Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
