When we feel stressed, it makes it more difficult to navigate life's challenges. Do you find yourself feeling more anxious, depressed or overwhelmed? Or doubting your own value? I can help. I can also help with those "healthy" habits you think you "should" be doing ("should", by the way, is an evil word. Notice how you can't say it without feeling guilt!). In addition, we can work to improve your relationships, habits and coping skills. I also support those with ADHD, even without a diagnosis. Together, we'll build the skills you need to feel stronger, healthier, more confident, calm + in control of your life.

I work with adults (18+yrs) who are challenged by depression, stress, anxiety, and/or trauma. I am particularly experienced in working with those who are struggling with relationships, poor self-confidence/self-esteem, addiction/substance use recovery, burnout, loss and/or grief, or adjusting to major life transitions (e.g., divorce, career, parenthood, retirement). Being a nurse also makes me uniquely positioned to help support others who work in healthcare. So many of my clients are nurses or other health care professionals who are struggling with work-life balance, burnout, or emotional challenges in their personal lives.

I am trained in Breathwork & Somatic Experiencing and often involve these modalities in my approach as well.
Hi, I'm Hunter. As a therapist who has lived experience with C-PTSD myself, I often work with clients who are looking for support in unlearning some of the protective patterns that they developed in childhood that are no longer helpful to them in their adult lives. I can offer a level of understanding beyond being trauma-informed, as my personal history combined with my education in trauma can support you in gaining a deeper understanding of how your reactions make sense on a biological level and how we can tap into the mind-body connection to create new, healthier patterns so that the old ones may eventually fall away.

Through the integration of EMDR, Somatic therapy and other evidence-based psychological modalities, I guide clients on a transformative journey.
When was the last time you experienced harmony with your core principles? At Hartwell Counselling, I provide a compassionate and transformative therapy rooted in evidence-based practices such as EMDR. EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and its the gold standard for treating and processing trauma. EMDR reduces trauma symptoms in a shorter time frame than the traditional talk therapy. Many clients have reported a reduction of traumatic symptoms after the initial few sessions of EMDR. EMDR is not a magic cure for trauma but it might produce some symptoms relief.

It all begins with a first step. Maybe you're feeling burnt out or contemplating a big change. Perhaps you are exploring some of life's deeper questions. Or maybe you want to find your voice through creativity. Whatever it is, how we approach your path can make all the difference. Often it is hard to describe the kind of change we are seeking, we just know that things can't continue as they are. That feeling of uncertainty that comes with new terrain is common, and part of my role as a therapist is to assist you in exploring and defining your needs as they evolve.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
