Does it feel like you haven’t been yourself lately? Do you have a hard time saying ‘no’ to others? Are you struggling to create the change you want, but not sure where (or how) to start? Are things from your past keeping you ‘stuck’, and you want to reclaim your life? We all have had things happen to us or have things about ourselves that we wish we could change. Sometimes, we develop thinking or behavioural patterns that helped us through hard times, but you may be noticing these thoughts or behaviours no longer benefit you in the same way they used to. Often we aren’t even aware of what cycles we are stuck in!

As a psychotherapist, I use cognitive-behavioral therapy and expressive arts including mindfulness.
Do you struggle with impacts of childhood trauma on your life? It can show up as anger, irritability, anxiety, chronic pain, physical sensations, depression etc. Do you feel that it affects your relationships, day-to-day life and your ability to be a 100%? Do you feel exhausted, tired, overwhelmed by past traumas and does answering emails, calls or texts become challenging? Does it feel like nothing seems to be helping? Working on traumas can be scary. Let's break it down into one step at a time.

I have experience working with youth and adults on several issues that we might experiment on in our life such as anxiety, stress, depression, grief, lack of self-esteem, motivation, difficulty doing things, and other behavioral conducts.
Life is not always the same and there are moments when things are not going as we wish, like or expected, so that´s when asking for help is a good way to go through it and move forward with our goals. La vida nunca es igual y hay momentos en que las cosas no van como esperábamos y es justo cuando pedir ayuda es una buena manera de avanzar hacia nuestras metas.

What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioural issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?

Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
