Therapy can be helpful to you whether you experience challenges with severe mental illness or addiction, or difficulties coping with the challenges of life. You may notice that it is getting more and more difficult to manage the day-to-day responsibilities and meet your goals in life. You may not be meeting the expectations that you have for yourself and feel discouraged to even try anymore. You may experience difficulty accepting certain transitions and events in your life. You may be frustrated and exhausted feeling stuck in a cycle of behavioural, mental and emotional challenges that seem to get worse.

I work in Gestalt, a relational and embodied modality of psychotherapy that draws on the present moment, the here and now, to support client experiences and relationships. Therapy is relational: each session is a new encounter. At the same time, therapy sessions are supported by the relationship between therapist and client. When we start working together, I learn about what aspects clients want to work on, and build a therapeutic alliance to support those goals. During sessions, I support my clients as they integrate, build, and maintain the relational experiences they find healing in.

In my experience working in the mental health sector for the last 5 years, therapy is often sought after someone has suffered long enough or until the symptoms become unmanageable. It is my hope that as we continue to de-stigmatize mental health more people can feel comfortable utilizing this valuable service as a preventative measure and not as a last resort. My approach as a therapist is simple: helping others increase awareness and insight into their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I believe through careful introspection and analysis we can reach a level of compassion and acceptance for ourselves and others.

Hey! Thanks for stopping by. I'm Samira & I offer a safe space where you can be heard and understood. Seeking therapy may be difficult and quite intimidating at first - but it’s one of the bravest things you can do - to take that step in order to understand your own life story and start the healing process and journey. It definitely takes a looot of courage! Understanding this, I strive to provide a compassionate, safe, empathetic, and non-judgmental space for you to feel comfortable to unburden yourself when it comes to the most personal and intimate parts of your life – one where you can explore and better understand yourself.

Counselling can be seen as planting a seed that, with nurturing and attention, will grow into something beautiful. Every individual is akin to a seed that undergoes continual growth, advancing through each fleeting season filled with moments of happiness, sorrows, triumphs, bravery, disappointments, and fresh starts. Like seeds, humans require sources and resources to aid them in reaching their full potential, such as sunlight, rain, and soil. And just like every seed holds importance, every human being also possesses inherent value. By choosing to seek counseling, you have taken the first step towards transformation.

Life at times can be overwhelming. The challenges of our lived experiences, childhood trauma, financial constraints and relationships can get the better of us. For those struggling, it is not always easy to seek help. Healing can begin when you acknowledge the hurt and allow yourself to create space for it, understand it and to heal through it. I am here to offer my support by taking on a trauma focused approach where counselling sessions will help you navigate the challenges and opportunities that life send your way. We can discuss ways in which to cope while also identifying your strengths and values.

As a first or second-generation Canadian or recent immigrant to Canada, it can often feel like you need to split yourself up into different versions to fit in. At home, school, work, and with friends, it seems like you’re navigating multiple identities, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, insecurity, exhaustion, or depression. You have big dreams and aspirations, yet you find that most of your energy is spent trying to meet other's expectations and not being able to invest it in yourself. When you are given that space to shine, you feel the need to apologize and find yourself shrinking back to be accepted.

Every story finds its beginning amidst the ongoing narrative of life, where our realities are shaped by our diverse experiences. Our upbringing, relationships, work, and education not only shape who we are but also influence the individuals we evolve into. Central to our understanding are the memories and moments of our childhood, serving as the foundation upon which our realities are built and providing us with the lens through which we perceive the world. Furthermore, our cultural background, early attachments, and environment contribute to refining and fortifying this lens, nurturing resilience, or fostering vulnerability.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.
How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?
It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.
What if the therapist does not have my exact background?
It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.
How do I recognise an effective Muslim therapist?
Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.
Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?
The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
