One million Canadian men suffer from major depressive disorder each year. Three of every four completed suicides in Canada are by men. The prevalence of alcohol use disorder is twice as high in men with another mental health diagnosis than in the general population. One third of Canadian men worry that talking about mental health at work could put their job at risk. Men are just as likely as women to have mental health issues yet are far less likely to utilize traditional mental health services. Men are more likely to believe that mental health services are difficult to access, ineffective and invasive. At Cogent, Ontario’s new mental health clinic focussed solely on supporting men, we’re changing that.

The focus in therapy is on providing a safe and non-judgemental environment for you to talk about your concerns and take the steps needed to achieve your goals for treatment. I draw inspiration from my own real-life experiences that include a healthy and happy decades-long marriage which taught me a great deal about family dynamics and their impact on the various stages of the family life cycle. As a co-op advisor for many years at the University of Waterloo, I counselled students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds on a range of workplace issues while helping them establish their career and academic goals.

I am a Jungian Psychoanalyst offering Jungian Analysis to individuals who want a deeper understanding of themselves. For many reasons, these persons feel emotionally in pain, conflicted or unbalanced in their inner and/or outer life and would benefit from exploring the deep rooted causes of relationship problems and unproductive emotional patterns. The direction of therapy is to look to the past and to the unconscious determinants of behaviour but also to open to the creative and positive movements of the psyche that offer a way forward even in the face of the greatest difficulties or trauma.

Sometimes life can have us feeling stuck in the same negative patterns; feeling disconnected from our sense of self & our sense of meaning, connection, presence or contentment. We may find ourselves on life’s path, believing that we are making progress, only to find that we have journeyed back to the same struggles. When we find ourselves here, it may be time to reach out for support. I believe that therapy gives us the space to delve below our current experience, into the root causes that are feeding our present challenges. When we experience healing at our roots we can make lasting positive changes in our lives.

Welcome! In therapy, my priority is to create a welcoming, accepting and safe therapeutic space. My approach is grounded in a “whole person” approach, working collaboratively to use your strengths and work towards your therapeutic goals. With this space, we can begin to work on processing thoughts, emotions and/or traumatic events. Becoming aware of our thoughts, we can guide them to be more helpful and true. Making small changes by adding in coping skills and healthy routines can lead to a domino affect to positive changes to your mood. I work with children, teens and adults.

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.
What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.
When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.
How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
