I use an integrative approach guided by recovery and harm reduction models, as well as EFT, DBT, and MI.
I am a social worker and a couple and family therapist with 30 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families. In couple therapy, my approach often involves helping couples repair and strengthen their relationships, reduce conflict, improve communication, and enhance emotional and physical intimacy. For families supporting a loved one with mental health and/or addiction-related concerns, I can help strengthen coping skills, self-care, communication, and boundaries.

DBT has helped me personally, and it’s my honour to offer it forward to others.
Hi! Thanks for visiting. Maybe it’s like you’re about to drown in overwhelm, and you wish you could catch your breath. Maybe that out-of-control urge exploded again, and you wish you could find that kind of relief without all the mess afterward. Maybe it exploded in one or more of your relationships, and you don’t know what to do, but you feel unspeakably lost or lonely about it. Maybe at times you’ve given up on life being worth living. Maybe other times you do everything you can think of to survive. Or maybe it’s your teen or someone else you love who’s going through things like this, and you need support. I’d love to help.

Our sessions will be grounded with the use of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy ( DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy; or by simply using our safe therapeutic space to tell your story, shape your future, and be assured you are being heard as you move towards your end goal.
I am an MSW, RSW, psychotherapist, and Registered Dietitian. For over 20 yrs, I have specialized in helping individuals and families to successfully move beyond the effects of a range of interpersonal relationship challenges including eating disorders. Our journey together is paced as we attend to mental health, emotional, and /or Eating Management skills-building needs. Along the way, it is often necessary to identify and adjust "taken-for-granted" thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors that no longer align with your evolving life goals. Together, we rebuild your skills, confidence, hope, life, and important relationships.

I work through a therapeutic framework of trauma-informed Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Relational Intelligence Therapy (associative therapy), CBT, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
Life can feel overwhelming at times. Uncertainty, unexpected challenges and self-doubt can weigh us down. Carrying such weight can cause us to experience fatigue, worry, sleepless nights, and unwanted behaviours, thoughts and emotions. Imagine what it would be like if some of that weight could be lifted. I offer compassionate care for people with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, grief and trauma. Based on an integrative mix of both person-centred and psychodynamic approaches, I endeavour to inspire compassionate self-understanding with an aim towards inner healing.

My therapy style combines elements of CBT, DBT, mindful self-compassion, narrative therapy and polyvagal theory, within a trauma-informed and person-centered approach.
My name is Cristobal (Cris) and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), offering online services in English and Spanish for adults. I have 18 years of counselling experience in a Toronto hospital setting, with a specialty in substance use and trauma. My typical client is usually seeking support with issues like anxiety, self-esteem, drugs and alcohol, trust of self and others, self-criticism, and difficulty managing emotions and relationships. I run my own private practice, called Build Me Up Therapy Service, and my guiding philosophy is to build up the client's skills, self-understanding, and confidence in themselves.

You have a dream for your life- create something special, make more money, start a family, live amazing experiences. Yet, despite wishing for these things, you can’t seem to make much progress. You write your goals down but that does not magically move you into action. You read self help books but the good feelings do not last long. You tried manifesting and you’re still waiting for that Bentley to come around the corner…Heck, you might have even tried therapy but week after week after week you just vent and rant and you might be starting to feel even worse...

In this moment, you may be feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious or burned out by life's challenges or transitional chapters. I believe that healing is growth in the face of adversity; it is a journey of coming (back) into yourself with deep self compassion, and we all have insight into how to get there. Sometimes we just need a bit of support along the way; someone to hold (non judgemental space) and work alongside us to find solutions, develop coping strategies and build on our own skills and wisdom so that we are more emotionally resilient to life's challenges.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Counsellors

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
