You thought that it would go differently, but recently connection has broken down between you and your partner. What might have started as money stress or infidelity has become confusing and difficult to manage. Every time you come back to the conversation, your distrust bubbles up and it throws everything off. You find yourself wondering: how did it get here? You’ve put so much into this relationship: your hopes, your commitment, your effort; of course you want it to pay off. But also, you can’t do this alone. After you’ve tried everything that you can think of, you could really use some help.

You are an individual. There is no one else quite like you. Your therapy should be as unique as you are. We are all the products of our past, from experiences that happened so long ago that they escape memory to what happened just as we opened the door to the present moment. Through it all, we learn the skills that protect us on this journey through the interpersonal world. We sometimes struggle to be our authentic selves because there is no SELF without the context of the OTHER. Each of us is a single being trying to be seen as we see ourselves in a never ending sea of often confusing but always important social interaction.

Many of my clients have suffered from trauma in some form or another.
I believe in treatment from the biopsychosocial perspective. From the biological perspective - pain management, nutrition, exercise, sleep; the psychological perspective - education, stress management, emotional regulation; and the social aspect - relationships, conflict resolution, and more. I provide an open and non-judgmental space where we can explore your life, thoughts, behaviour, emotions and relationships, and together work towards reducing unwanted thoughts and feelings. I also encourage nature therapy, where you reconnect with nature and improve your sense of peace.

We are all on a path of healing and discovery that leads, eventually and inevitably, to the realization of our true potential. I see psychotherapy as a powerful companion on this journey - it is a helpful friend that can help ease the burden during dark times, and it is a ray of light that can guide us more quickly beyond our own limitations when we are moving towards a goal. My practice is based in modern cognitive therapy and the neuroscience of trauma, while always anchored in the wisdom of mindfulness, acceptance and nondual awareness.

We’re going to work together and empower you to manage your life circumstances.
My goal every day is to offer a supportive, practical approach to therapy. Throughout my career, I’ve tended to work primarily with people who have mood or anxiety difficulties. Some are undergoing or have undergone significant life transitions such as grief from loss. Others come to me for guidance around work-related stress or burnout. And others wish to examine the patterns and practices around their substance use.

I have heard many people say that seeing a therapist means you're weak, but it's actually a sign of wisdom and strength.
Chad is an award winning therapist who doesn't actually enjoy writing in the third person. My main goal is to help people know how to be emotionally healthy using a combination of tools I've created through life experience and modalities like solution focused therapy, CBT, EFT, and DBT. I tend to be a bit different than traditional therapists as I often have more laughs than tears in my office, but either way, my hope is to help people feel cared about and safe enough to share their lives. Men (or anyone) who are nervous about therapy or people who have had a bad experience with it tend to really like my down to earth style.

People encounter problems in their lives and come into relationship with them. Sometimes problems stay around longer than people would like - sometimes even long enough that they start to see themselves as the problem. My approach follows the narrative therapy practice of externalizing and examining problems so that we can reveal their histories, their impacts, and also the ways you have resisted their unwanted influence on your life. This approach focuses on the active role you play in pursuing the life that you want, as well as the people and things that support you in that pursuit.

I believe that the journey of psychotherapy is a relational one. I strive to help people discover their abilities to better connect with people in their lives as they move forward in their healing journey. I have 20 years of experience working in the mental health field in various capacities, including children, youth and adults. I currently teach and research at the University of Windsor and am adjunct faculty for the Kings University College, in addition to my practice.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers I believe that the first step in moving towards the life you want is to accept yourself and your position as they are. This is not a request to settle, but rather, an invitation to look at the cards you hold. Only after accepting how things are can your next steps be determined. I can provide the space for you to express how difficult things are, while the healing relationship we build together will serve as the vehicle driving change. Seeking support is not easy, and you are stronger than you think by simply taking this first step.

I bring a mindful/meditative practice, from my own life and from my education to be of service to you and whatever is ailing you. No problem is too big or too small. Whatever is impacting your life, in a negative way is worth sorting through together. I have a special interest in working with people involved in healthcare because I've spent the last 10 years working in hospitals. Pain and suffering are part of life. How we live and learn from our suffering is our life's work. Once we discover ourselves, our true nature, we are free to live with more happiness and love.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
