“Whether we’re overcoming adversity, surviving trauma or dealing with stress or anxiety, having a sense of purpose, meaning, and perspective in our lives allows us to develop understanding and move forward. Without purpose, meaning and perspective, it is easy to lose hope, numb our emotions or become overwhelmed by our circumstances. We feel reduced, less capable, and lose in the face of struggle. The heart of spirituality is connection. When we believe in that inextricable connection, we don’t feel alone.” – Brene Brown

Do you find yourself struggling to manage the everyday stressors that come with family life, despite all of your preparation and hard work? Your to-do list always feels too long, each task feels too daunting. Being a parent leaves you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and worried that you’re not doing enough. You feel pressured to be “on” all the time.

Opening up is difficult. Often we're told to deal with it, or that things will get better. Maybe you’re going through a transition, feeling overwhelmed, tired, or stuck. Maybe you’ve been feeling an emotion you’ve been told you’re not supposed to feel. Navigating these conflicting thoughts and feelings can be a lot to manage, but you do not have to manage them alone. Maybe you feel like your problems are too big or too small. Maybe you feel like something is just a passing thought and is not worth bringing up. When working with me, nothing is off the table – if it’s important to you, then it is important to me.

Hello! My name is Allyson. As a therapist I love connecting with individuals who are aspiring to live a life more aligned with their personal values. This might mean you're struggling with anxiety, depression, body-focused repetitive behaviours (skin-picking or hair-pulling) or managing symptoms of ADHD and want to engage in a collaborative therapeutic relationship with the intention of moving towards finding your best self. I typically work with children (6 and up), teens and emerging adults.

My clients are usually people in life transition, they feel overwhelmed and want to discuss their issues and get some clarity and help with decision making and coping strategies. They may have a complicated life situation and often medical and mental health problems combined. I can help them to maximize their health during stressful times and focus on goals and direction in the present and future. Personal and family situations, relationships, health and medication management, work and school and grief and isolation. With some support and professional guidance many situations that feel overwhelming and hopeless can be opportunities.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
