I exclusively offer online sessions through a dedicated team at Strength Counselling Services. Over the years, I’ve gained a strong understanding of what makes therapy effective, especially when it comes to the social and psychological aspects that can impact peoples lives. My work as a full-time Hospital Social Worker has given me hands-on experience, particularly in mental health care across different settings like geriatric rehabilitation, emergency medicine, and psychiatric care. My background in psychotherapy has sharpened my skills in both group and individual therapy, especially when it comes to helping kids and teens.

Problems have a way, often many ways, of intruding and trodding through our lives, in ways that undermine our wishes, our hopes and the relationships with people we hold dear. They can leave us believing we are powerless and the situation is hopeless. Problems can use language that make them seem all powerful, sometimes the words themselves can make them appear ‘almost per manent’ (depression, anxiety, trauma, and so on). They can cling to us.. Come consider the other vibrant and sustaining stories that are seeking you out... Come stand in a space where we actively pursue anti-colonial ways of talking/working.

I am happy to work with an extensive range of clients and organize my practice around providing Client-Centred Therapy grounded in empirically-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally, I have lived experience as a first responder and am passionate about addressing the unique challenges associated with fulfilling such roles. In my experience working with people over the last 10 years, I've found that often their challenges are best addressed first and foremost by being heard; this act of listening is a gift that unlocks the resources hidden within.

Disconnected. Broken. Hopeless. Powerless. Stuck. Many men tell me this is how they feel in our first session. Taking the first step to make change in your life and accept support can sometimes feel the most challenging and overwhelming. As a male therapist, I have learned that working with men requires a focus on practical solutions, a safe and comfortable environment, a therapist who understands the unique personal and societal challenges men face, an emphasis on self-compassion and self-acceptance, and a willingness to address underlying issues. I have extended training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotionally Focussed Couple Therapy, and Gott man Method Therapy.
Sometimes people get stuck. Individuals and couples come to me for counselling to talk about a variety of problems - things like conflict in relationships, anxiety, depression, overwhelming stress, abuse, grief, vocational crisis, or anger. A counselling relationship helps people to move from understanding issues to co-creating solutions - solutions that shrink and manage problems. I use an integrative approach, drawing on different counselling methods depending on what works best for the client, including practices from cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and solution-based therapy. I can help you to move through difficult times with courage, accountability, and positive resolve.

Life is so complicated! Do we need anxiety and depression to add to our list of issues? Stress from our jobs, partners, spouses and family dysfunction just add to the list of everyday pressures. Add childhood and early life traumas and the plate is already overwhelming. Our goal is to thrive in today’s crazy world and overcome the stubborn obstacles that hold us back from emotional happiness.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
