Call me if you would like to feel that you are managing and directing your life rather than your life is running and directing you!.
Are you thinking that something needs to change? Do you feel a little tired, scared, hurt or fed up? Are there meaningful things in your life that aren't working out right now? Is it time you stood up, and took on, what has been heavy on your mind or heart? I have worked with hundreds of individuals, couples and families who have faced challenges and transitions that many of us experience at some time in our lives. I am familiar with the things life can throw your way, and how to be able to thrive, not just survive, afterwards.

My passion is to walk with people as they navigate through difficult and confusing times. My multidisciplinary education in science, philosophy, religion, psychology and psychotherapy allows me to look at the person and their life from a holistic perspective. Sometimes we need counseling because we are stuck and don’t know how to move forward. Other times we need it to learn healthy skills to prevent us from falling into some difficult and stressful situations. Whether you’re dealing with depression, an addiction, a relationship conflict or a variety of other issues, I’d love to assist you understanding and resolution.

We all want a better life and we are all doing the best we can with what we have. But sometimes we can get stuck in routines, unsure of how to make the change we so desperately want to see in our lives. Sometimes even asking ourselves "what do I want?" can be anxiety provoking and make us feel like we're stuck when we can't answer it. Times like this we can even find ourselves appealing to others' needs and "living for others" all the while feeling like something is missing. Everything we do has some benefit to us, otherwise we wouldn't do it. Getting to the heart of this underlying want can be the empowering change we need.

In-person at Danforth and Broadview, or online. "My life is fine, why do I feel like this?" "Why does this keep happening?" "What is wrong with me?" Depression, addiction, anxiety, feeling stuck, loneliness, challenges around transitions and problems in relationships often point to complex or developmental trauma with no quick fix. I work with people who are ready for things to get better, but don't know where to start, or can't manage to make the desired changes. If you're reading this you can tell that something is wrong, but might not know where to start. The power to change is inside you waiting to be found.

I am excited about the possibility of having a positive impact on another hu man being as I offer psychotherapy services.
Personal growth lies within the unknown; courage permits you to explore this space. I believe therapy works well when clients have the courage to explore the unknown and have a therapist who can hold space and can listen deeply without judgement. This creates trust and the safety to be who you are to explore without needing the armour that we all use to protect ourselves in the world. Client and therapist co-create a space to grow together in contact with each other.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
