Many times we find ourselves "stuck in a rut" not knowing how to address our challenges. It looks like we are separated from our goals and we are not sure how to move forward. Seeing a psychotherapist is like the process of crossing the bridge to freedom from "here" to "where you want/need to be". In my practice, I use a holistic treatment approach consisting of: psychotherapy , lifestyle management strategies ( sleep, nutrition, physical exercise), building support and at client's request spiritual/ faith-based practice(s).

Anxiety, depression, and critical self-talk can feel debilitating. On the outside you may seem fine to others, you might even respond with "great" when they ask how you're doing, but on the inside you're stuck in patterns of overthinking, incessant worry, lack of motivation, and weariness. There is hope that life can be different, even if you feel anxiety and depression have become part of who you are. Counselling can help identify patterns of negative thinking and offer fresh insights, rewiring the brain's pathways, creating healthier ways of being.

There are times in each of our lives when we feel lost, overwhelmed and we don't recognize ourselves. For some it may be a loss or trauma, while for others, feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness can become too much to bear alone. Through a safe and non-judgmental relationship, clients are supported in recognizing their needs and then given the tools and assistance required to meet their therapeutic goals. By helping people feel like themselves again, I hope to help them to regain their health and rediscover the joy in their everyday lives.

My name is Emily (she/they) and within the foundation of my practice is the belief that everyone has the skills they need to better understand themselves, improve their relationships, manage their symptoms and move through life's stressors successfully. Therapy shouldn't feel like a chore. While it might sometimes be hard to hear what is discussed in therapy, overall you should leave feeling like you've gained something useful or even transformative. Over time, you should feel you are getting stronger, more resilient and have shed layers of fear and anxiety. Of course this process can be overwhelming at times and you might not always progress on the timeframe that you thought you would, but when therapy goes well, you should feel more settled and more clear about your life. You should gain understanding about yourself and others and have a renewed sense of purpose and passion

Navigating life's crossroads can be especially overwhelming for people grappling with trauma or PTSD. These moments—choosing careers, pursuing education or sports, forming relationships, or seeking personal growth—can be overshadowed by past experiences, intensifying feelings of anxiety, emptiness, and a constant sense that something vital is missing. This can complicate making decisions, having it seem almost impossible to choose the right path forward, and the presence of trauma intensifies the pressure of these decisions. I get it, and I'm here to support you through this struggle, through thick and thin.

Welcome! Life presents with many challenges... work stress, relationship stress, health issues, parenting, caregiving of parents, juggling so many different responsibilities. It can seem overwhelming when trying to manage it all. And sometimes struggles or hurts from the past, can seem to creep into our everyday lives when we would much rather leave those hurts behind. What a relief it would be... to release those worries, to alleviate those stresses, to heal those hurts. They are heavy to carry, and as we try to keep going, they get heavier along the way. What if, you could have help, to change that...

It takes courage to initiate therapy but investing in your well-being is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself. Whether you are seeking to learn strategies to cope with life's ups and downs, tools to manage challenging emotions, or support with difficult life events, it is my privledge to be here for you. While I possess a variety of tools to support you, I believe people are the experts in their own lives and therefore, therapy must be a collaborative process. I work together with you, so you can feel heard, understood, and ultimately empowered to cope and resolve the issues that brought you to counselling.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
