I use an eclectic client-centred approach which might include counselling informed by CBT, DBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD, the Gottman Method for Couples and trauma informed approaches.
I work with teens, individuals and couples as they navigate challenges of every day life, traumatic events and mental health challenges. Some individuals are very aware of where they are struggling, which helps us to align quickly and start working together. Whereas others might be new to counselling and really want a trained clinician to help them to understand and make sense of their world and experiences. I offer a client centered approach and will meet you where you are at. My approach centers on building strong, warm relationships with my clients, where both growth and humor can co-exist.

I draw from evidence-based therapeutic modalities, such as EMDR, CBT, DBT, EFT, Gottman Method, Imago therapy, and IFS.
Accepting new couples - Struggling with relationships can be overwhelming. Battling anxiety and low mood can be draining. Grief can be life changing. Stress and trauma can be paralyzing. You’re not alone and I am happy to help. I am here to listen and offer support in a space filled with comfort, knowledge, and without judgement. A space where we can work together, as a team, to overcome these challenges. I am committed to building a trusting and collaborative relationship with each person, where they not only feel heard, valued, and understood, while having something to take away from each session.

I most often draw upon CBT techniques, as well as Emotion-Focused and Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
Clients of all ages come to me with a range of concerns, such as marital problems, mood disorders, relationship challenges, parenting struggles and other disturbances. They want the opportunity to tell their stories without judgment, to be asked the right questions, and be heard and understood. With this in mind, clients are assisted in identifying clear attainable goals for personal change in a collaborative manner, and empirically validated methods are used to help them achieve their goals.

In my work with clients, my goal is to help you explore and process the ways you feel stuck in your life and far from your goals. Are there stories you are holding about your life that are no longer serving you and are hard to let go of? I hope to help clients discover stuck narratives and choose the path that allows for a different kind of relationship with self and others. Whether it is a pattern of conflict you wish to approach differently, a topic you struggle to get perspective on or a challenge in the relationship you need help exploring thoughtfully, I hope to help create a space where change is possible.

Separation & divorce is not something you considered when you and your partner were planning your lives together. Unfortunately divorce is common and is an incredibly painful process which you can't typically prepare for. It can generate intense emotions such as anger, confusion, betrayal, loneliness, & hopelessness. Even if you know it's the right decision, you will likely be experiencing grief over what you had hoped your relationship would be. Co-parenting is another level to manage. This process can make you question who you are, and what your life will look like moving forward.

Gottman Method Counsellors

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analysed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomised controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
