Separation & divorce is not something you considered when you and your partner were planning your lives together. Unfortunately divorce is common and is an incredibly painful process which you can't typically prepare for. It can generate intense emotions such as anger, confusion, betrayal, loneliness, & hopelessness. Even if you know it's the right decision, you will likely be experiencing grief over what you had hoped your relationship would be. Co-parenting is another level to manage. This process can make you question who you are, and what your life will look like moving forward.

Are you facing grief and loss due to the death of a loved one, a divorce, separation, empty nest, or another life-altering transition? Often, grievers worry they are handling it incorrectly or wonder if their experience is normal. Many of us are unprepared for the pain that grief brings and lack the knowledge needed to navigate its wild nature. Perhaps your transition is causing a ruptured sense of self, loneliness, and uncertainty. As Carl Jung said, 'Embrace your grief, for there your soul will grow.'

No WAIT List! Do you feel like you are struggling, been treading water, floundering for the last few months, maybe even years? Have big life transitions- illness, career, marriage, divorce, care-giving, or just moving from one stage of life to another keep you up at night thinking about the worst case scenario? Do you drag yourself out of bed each day feeling like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, and trying to figure out how you are going to do it all, and do it right? Do you ‘should’ yourself until your brain buzzes with an unending list of things that you aren’t doing and think you 'should' be.

I provide a non-judgmental space so clients can feel safe to openly share their thoughts, emotions and experiences. I specialize in helping individuals learn and apply new skills and strategies that help make impactful shifts that lead to meaningful change.

EMDR is a therapy that has you focus on a trigger or trauma while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (eye movement, tapping or tones), leading to a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the incident. Thoughts, behaviours, feelings, traumas or environmental triggers may be maintaining your stress, grief, anxiety, depression, addiction, or other issues. EMDR and other methods can improve your physical, emotional and psychological health and wellness to increase your sense of well‐being, alleviate feelings of stress, reframe negative thoughts, or work through any recent crises or past traumas.

If you feel like something is in the way or holding you back from reaching your life worth living goals or finding connection, then I would like to help you . At some points, we can all experience difficult times and need support to guide us through. Experiences that have caused anxiety, pain, grief, loss, lack of connection, or shame can feel overwhelming if left unrecognized. I have found that through the creation of a safe, supportive, client-therapist relationship healing and change can happen. Authenticity, trust & respect are the guideline principles of my practice.

Divorce Counsellors

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
