You will be able to discuss a range of topics from postpartum depression, anxiety, life transitions and racial identity with me (to name a few) but it does not stop there.
Are you looking for a space in which you can feel safe, seen and heard? Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious or confused with life? How many of us grew up hearing the negative connotation surrounding therapy? How many of us grew up with a distrust for individuals such as therapists, doctors, teachers, etc? This caused many individuals that look like us to suffer in silence for years with their mental health. It can feel overwhelming to start your healing journey but I am here to guide you through that process. You can expect an open and non-judgmental space to discuss your current challenges and symptoms.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is ask for help. The process of understanding your struggles with anxiety, depression, grief, a challenging relationship, loss of a sense of self etc., that affects the aspects of your day-to-day life, ability to function, work, and career. Some people see therapy as a waste of time, and some people see it as an opportunity to heal. I want the best outcome for you, by guiding you to believe in yourself and learn how to remove the negative thoughts that have kept you from being your best. As you embark on this journey the experience will be, new, truthful, and uncomfortable at times.

I specialize in trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, children and youth with sexual behaviour problems, family conflict, and relationship issues.
Welcome to Olive Tree Counselling and Psychotherapy! I believe the tree is a great metaphor for helping clients understand how their current difficulties are often rooted in earlier experiences. Like the olive tree, I believe people are inherently resilient and capable of thriving in spite of the challenges they may face. Reaching out for help can be a daunting experience, but I can offer a safe and empathetic space for you to gain insight into and process past hurts, explore healthier ways to cope, live a more meaningful and authentic life, and learn how to communicate your needs and boundaries with others.

Possess over 20 years of social work experience working with individuals, youths, older adults and families in mental health, child welfare and community services. I enjoy watching the light bulb go off for each young person that I work with as they learn just how much they are capable of achieving. It is rewarding to see them lighting up when praised for a job well-done, or realizing that they are capable of accomplishing anything that they set their minds to. I enjoy watching the joy that a new sense of confident brings to them and their families.

I specialize in a form of therapy called EMDR, which can be especially helpful for PTSD, trauma, anxiety, and depression.
When you are so focused on simply getting through each day, it can be easy to begin to lose yourself, forgetting who you are, and what you want. Therapy can be a doorway to healing from past trauma and discovering yourself anew. You can learn to find peace and balance in your life, and cultivate a deeper understanding of what care you need, and how much support you can give to others. I offer therapy for people struggling with trauma, anxiety, burnout, grief and loss, post-partum mental health concerns, ADHD, Autism, and newcomers to Canada who want to talk about this big life change.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
