Everyone deserves support and encouragement to realize their strengths and work towards a meaningful life. Life gets overwhelming, and when you're feeling down, exhausted, and stressed out, you may feel less motivated to do the things you enjoy. You may also feel disconnected, both from yourself, and others in your life. If you're feeling this way, it probably brought you here. I know how difficult it is to reach out for support, so I hope you can take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate that you are taking this first step. I can't wait to speak with you more and see if we are a good fit. I offer complimentary consultations.

Do you ever feel like others are judging you? From the way you look, to how you dress? This feeling of being stared at, or like somehow you don’t ‘fit in’, can make your heart feel like it’s beating out of your chest. You may find yourself avoiding school or social situations because you feel overwhelmed by the fear of the unknown. Whether it’s the daily ride on the bus, a time of transition from the world of school into the workplace, everyone has challenges in life that can feel overwhelming. Looking for support is a courageous first step on your journey to feeling more confidence in yourself, and hopeful for your future.

Do you struggle with feeling disconnected from yourself and others? Does your hopes and dreams seem so far from being able to be achieved? Perhaps just getting through the day has been a challenge for you lately. More than ever, people feel anxious, overwhelmed and uncertain about their tomorrow. As we go through life, we experience breakups, hardships, sickness, failure, and loneliness. My journey started with being born and raised in Australia where everything is said to be, “She’ll be right mate!”. We all know this is not the case.

While it is true that every life has its highs and lows, sometimes the lows are hard to manage and support may be needed to regain strength. I provide counselling for children and adults, both individually and within the context of the family. I work from a variety of theoretical perspectives including but not limited to CBT, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Family Systems. My clients establish their own goals for therapy and I provide support in defining the objectives for meeting those goals. I believe that my clients are the experts on their own lives and I am there to facilitate the changes they desire.

Struggling with depression, ADHD, anxiety, grief, loss, co-dependency, trauma, or being on the autism spectrum can be incredibly challenging. As a trauma-informed psychotherapist and rehabilitation therapist, I understand the impact that these changes can have on individuals and families. These impacts run deep and can often affect our mind, body, spirit, relationships and self-esteem. I believe that every individual can heal, grow and develop resiliency. Welcome! I understand the complexity of mind-body connections in healing. With collaborative efforts, we tackle accumulated trauma and various mental health challenges using somatic, behavioural, and cognitive techniques. In addition, I prioritize equipping individuals with diverse tools to deal with everyday/daily challenges. If you aim to tackle underlying issues rather than merely treating symptoms, then you're in the right place.

For many of us, it’s easy to allow our mental health to take a backseat in our everyday lives. We may rely on distractions but we know that it’s time to look for support that will lead us into maintaining a healthier relationship with our mental health. I work with adults and children 9 and up who are seeking treatment in family conflict, anger management, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations, self-esteem, school-related issues and women’s issues. As a Registered Psychotherapist, my hope is to support clients who are looking to address these matters in a safe and stigma-free zone.

In addition to working with people of colour and immigrants, I can assist with personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and more.
As a recent immigrant, I am familiar with the process of being uprooted, losing your familiarity and trying to find stability in a new home. It can be scary, exciting, overwhelming and confusing. Being human means we have the ability to experience a wide range of emotions, often at the same time! It is possible to feel grief and joy in the same experience. Sorting through those emotions can be difficult, and therapy may be what you need to find clarity and connection with yourself through life transitions.

I’m a registered social worker and highly skilled psychotherapist for over 15 years of clinical experience working with children, youth, and adults who are mainly survivors of sexual abuse. Sexual trauma can create long lasting emotional and psychological issues ranging from PTSD, relationship problems, trust issues, feelings of shame and guilt, eating disorders, anxiety issues, depression, addiction, self-harming or suicidal thoughts. It takes a lot of courage for someone to be ready for therapy in hopes for a chance to finally move on and not let the past continue to hold you back anymore.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
