Are you experiencing overwhelming emotions, uncomfortable physical symptoms or life feels like it is "too much"? Perhaps your behaviour has recently changed and you are finding it hard to make a decision, focus on work or concentrate on conversations. Are you finding it difficult to connect and maintain your relationships and feel disconnected from your friends and family? You have developed coping skills, but certain overwhelming life events (can be trauma) that have happened in your past can sometimes be too much to process. Eventually, we all have the potential to develop a wide range of troubling and confusing symptoms.

Relationships are central to our well-being. When our relationships are not going well, we can become lonely and isolated, and our mental health suffers. Seeking professional help to look at how we function in our relationships and the impact that they have on us and we on them, can open possibilities for growth. By recognizing the present-day impact of past events, by focusing on our goals for the future, and by changing unhelpful thinking patterns, we can find a path to improved relationships and better mental health.

Therapy shouldn't feel like a chore. While it might sometimes be hard to hear what is discussed in therapy, overall you should leave feeling like you've gained something useful or even transformative. Over time, you should feel you are getting stronger, more resilient and have shed layers of fear and anxiety. Of course this process can be overwhelming at times and you might not always progress on the timeframe that you thought you would, but when therapy goes well, you should feel more settled and more clear about your life. You should gain understanding about yourself and others and have a renewed sense of purpose and passion

I work with clients on a wide range of issues from depression, anxiety, and stress to trauma, grief, and addiction. I have an avid interest in animal assisted wellness and am training towards certification in animal assisted therapy. I work from the belief that we do not heal in isolation. Therapy can provide a space for exploration of your lived experience and internal world, and can help with deepening your connection to self. I view healing as a process of integration, where all parts of you can be met with care, compassion, and understanding. As a therapist I aim to provide deep listening, and will accompany you as you work through painful or difficult experiences. I believe in the importance of creating safety within this work, so that the healing process is not overwhelming. I believe that trauma lives in the body, and so too does the wisdom to heal it.

I'm glad you stumbled upon my profile! Welcome. As a parent with an active toddler and a full time job, I can respect and appreciate directness and efficiency. For this reason, I am a huge believer that most of us can make changes within a short period of time. My approach tends to be direct with a touch of humour.

Do you feel stuck and unable to change? You’ve worked hard to get to where you are but find yourself asking “is this as good as it gets?”. You know that pain and stress are a normal part of life, but it throws you every time. You feel irritated when something doesn’t go as planned, or feel like you go from 0 to 100 within a matter of moments. You find yourself going into autopilot just to get through the day, or sometimes even crying all alone. Regardless of when life got hard, it’s the same old pattern. You want to feel better – you just don’t know how.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
