I have formal clinical training in several different evidence-based counselling modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
I come into this work with almost a decade of experience in providing accessible mental health supports to youth and families with complex barriers to wellness and stability. I have worked within a multitude of community settings with individuals that often experience systemic barriers to safe, accessible, and affirming supports. I have deep passion for supporting individuals and their families who have experienced incarceration and homelessness, as well as family breakdown due to the child welfare system. I've worked within LGBTQ community for many years, and passionately support youth and their families in healing and growth.

Here's the good news: OCD recovery is possible! As a clinician trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (Ex/RP) therapy (the gold-standard treatment for OCD), I will collaborate with you and your family to support you.
Perhaps it started with one or two jarring and disturbing thoughts or images or an unshakable feeling that something wasn't right. Desperate to get rid of this unsettling experience, you performed a behaviour or mental act that you just felt compelled to complete, and at first, it seemed to help. Now you are caught in a vicious cycle where you feel the overwhelming urge to engage in certain thoughts or behaviours over and over in search of relief. You're stuck, and you desperately want to get out. If you can relate, you are not alone. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an experience that affects 1-2% of the population.

Your life feels like it is falling apart and you are being pulled in so many different directions. Your employer needs you; your family needs you, and so do your friends. You feel overwhelmed, defeated, anxious, and depressed. You are trying to hold it all together but it is catching up to you and you can’t do it anymore. You give so much to everyone else and there is nothing left of you. You have lost yourself and you just can’t cope anymore.

Recovery from OCD is a team endeavour, and we can't wait to help your family.
You're noticing changes in your child's behaviour; it doesn't make sense. They're acting strange, out of their character. Why does my child seem afraid; anxious? It seems like you've tried everything to help them feel better, but nothing seems to work and you're confused, fighting the feeling of helplessness. You find yourself walking on eggshells for fear of making the behaviour worse, because you don't understand what's happening.

Therapy is an opportunity to increase our resilience and to learn how to cope with undesirable life events. Anger, fear, sadness or guilt arise when life experiences are overlooked, neglected, and ununderstood. Anxiety & Depression is a response to the failure to care for the feelings & emotions of the self. Likewise, feelings of stress and inner discomfort need understanding to be changed. The psychotherapy techniques I use to ease client issues and discomfort include CBT, Talking Therapy, DBT skills, Client-Centred, Compassion, Emotional and Solution Focus Therapy, Psychoeducation, frameworks of attachment, and family systems.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
