Upsetting news in the moment can lead to troubled days, and letting those troubles fester can create one heck of a miserable existence that impacts every facet of your life. What we don't learn from or resolve, inevitably circles back to remind us that change needs to happen. Believe me, we have all been there! A doctor or spouse tells you that you need to make a change due to a health scare or a relationship problem and you have no idea where to begin. You start asking the questions - How did I get here? How do I change it? Can I change it? Is it worth making all the effort for the change that you think you need or want?

Mental health is healthcare. Often, it can feel like our mental health, disabilities, or neurodivergence is out of our control and doesn’t fit into the world around us. This cannot be further from the truth. Working alongside you, we can find ways that work for you, in bringing you to a place of understanding and well-being.

Are you somebody who is currently experiencing inner turmoil, conflict, or is having a difficult time being at peace with themselves? Perhaps you're a little too familiar with your inner-critic and seeking a more kind way of engaging with yourself and others. Being a human means experiencing hardships at times, and the question that guides my approach to therapy as we navigate these times together is: "Who do you want to be towards yourself during the difficult moments?" If your answer includes something along the lines of gentle, kind, compassionate, and loving, then you are in the right place.

You may be struggling with pain and trauma from the past that has negatively impacted your view of self, others and the world. Or maybe you are feeling overwhelmed or exhausted by the chaos of life, stuck in the mundane or immobilized by fear. Perhaps you are feeling alone or disconnected in your relationship or are caught in a negative loop of guilt, shame and blame. None of us are immune to pain and we all have different ways of coping. Are you hoping to learn new ways to deal with stress and experience more joy and peace? Would you like to live more authentically and to develop more deeper and enriching relationships?

With over 10 years of experience practicing in various sectors of mental health, I have been providing a safe and supportive environment to individuals, couples, and families to create change. I use a client-centered approach, starting with where my client is at, to find one small change we can create together. Sometimes the hardest step is reaching out to another person. If you are struggling with grief and loss, work-related stress, difficult life situations or transitions, symptoms of anxiety, depression or stress, chronic pain, or relationship concerns; please take the first step and reach out for support.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
